Ethiopian Name Generator

Ethiopian names work differently from Western ones: there is no family surname. A person has a given name followed by their father's given name, and on official documents their grandfather's name too. Haile Gebrselassie is Haile, son of Gebrselassie; his children carry Haile as their second name. Women keep their own names at marriage. This is why athletes like Tirunesh Dibaba and Genzebe Dibaba are sisters, and why calling someone "Mr. Gebrselassie" is a mistake; Ethiopians go by their first name.

Most names come from Amharic and Tigrinya, Semitic languages of the Orthodox Christian highlands, and many carry a religious or hopeful meaning.
