Names for kangaroos, wallabies and joeys, from sanctuary animals to plush toys and mascots: hopping names like Pogo and Hopscotch, boxing names such as Southpaw and Uppercut, pouch names, outback places like Oodnadatta and Coober Pedy, and mother-and-joey pairs such as Pocket & Change.

About kangaroo names

The word kangaroo comes from gangurru, a word in the Guugu Yimithirr language of far north Queensland, and Australian English has plenty more words for the animal. A male is a boomer or a jack, a female is a flyer or a jill, the young are joeys and a group is a mob. All of those are in the list, along with Big Red and Blue Flyer, bush names for the male and female red kangaroo.

The list puts its weight on what only a kangaroo has. There are hopping names (Pogo, Hopscotch, Giant Leap), boxing names (Southpaw, Uppercut, Rope-a-Roo), pouch names (Pocket, Stowaway, Carry-On) and red and gray coat names such as Ochre, Red Dust and Woodsmoke. The places come from the outback instead of the coast: Oodnadatta, Coober Pedy, Birdsville, Innamincka and the Diamantina, with bush plants like Spinifex, Mulga and Kangaroo Paw.

Wallabies and their smaller cousins are here too (Quokka, Pademelon, Bettong, Tammar), and so are names for a mother and her joey, written as pairs: Pocket & Change, Flyer & Joey, Waltz & Matilda. Named cartoon and television kangaroos are left out; the list sticks to everyday words and wordplay.

How to choose kangaroo names

  • Pick by the job the name has to do. A sanctuary or zoo kangaroo suits a place or bush name (Mungo, Wilga, Barcoo), a plush toy suits wordplay (Hoptimist, Peekaroo), and a mascot suits a boxing name such as Southpaw or Haymaker.
  • Naming a mother and joey together? Choose a pair that splits a phrase, like Pocket & Change or Kit & Caboodle, and check that each half still works by itself once the joey leaves the pouch.
  • Match the coat: red kangaroos suit Ochre, Rufous, Pindan and Red Dust, and grays suit Woodsmoke, Bluebush and Morning Mist.
  • Australian place names can be long, so try them out loud first. Oodnadatta and Cunnamulla are fun to say, and Coober Pedy shortens neatly to Coober.
  • For a wallaby, look at the species names in the list: Tammar, Parma, Bennett and Nailtail are all real kinds of wallaby.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a kangaroo?

Names built on hopping, boxing or the pouch fit best: Pogo, Hopscotch, Boomerang, Southpaw, Pocket and Stowaway are all in the list. For an Australian feel, try an outback place such as Mungo, Barcoo, Birdsville or Oodnadatta.

What is a baby kangaroo called, and what are good joey names?

A baby kangaroo is a joey. The list has small, pouch-sized names such as Jojo, Peeper, Squeak, Nipper, Jellybean and Half Pint, plus pouch jokes like Stowaway, Free Ride and Window Seat.

What are male and female kangaroos called?

In Australian English a male is a boomer, buck or jack and a female is a flyer, doe or jill. Boomer, Flyer, Jack and Jill are in the list, along with Big Red and Blue Flyer, bush names for the male and female red kangaroo.

Are there names for a mother kangaroo and her joey?

Yes. Part of the list is written as pairs joined with an ampersand, for example Mum & Bub, Pocket & Change, Big Hop & Little Hop and Jill & Joey. Use the first name for the mother and the second for the joey.
