Generate names for dragonflies and damselflies: real species such as Blue Dasher, Widow Skimmer and Banded Demoiselle, pet names like Zip, Glint and Pondlight, and storybook characters like Sir Hover and Lady Jewelwing. Use them for a garden visitor, a picture book, a boat or a mascot.

About dragonfly names

Dragonflies arrive with good names already. English field guides sort them into groups that sound like characters: darners (the hawkers of British guides), skimmers, chasers, darters, emeralds, pennants and meadowhawks, and among the damselflies the bluets, dancers and jewelwings. Roughly one name in seven here is the common name of a real species: Blue Dasher, Widow Skimmer, Halloween Pennant, Emperor Dragonfly, Banded Demoiselle, Ebony Jewelwing.

A similar share is invented in the same pattern for storytellers and worldbuilders. Those are built on storybook, kitchen and village words (Teacup Darner, Marmalade Skimmer, Carousel Pennant, Tin Soldier Dragonfly), and none of them is a real insect. The rest are names to give: flight words such as Zip, Hover and Whirlybird, jewel colors such as Sapphire and Verdigris, pond and reed names such as Pondlight and Reedwhistle, titled characters such as Sir Hover and Lady Jewelwing, boat and team names, and little-dragon names such as Pocket Dragon.

The list also holds the word for dragonfly in other languages, from Libellule and Libelle to Tonbo, some thirty genus names such as Anax, and a handful of old English folk names, each marked as a folk name. Those came from superstition, not biology: dragonflies have no sting.

How to choose dragonfly names

  • Start from the color you saw: Sapphire, Cerulean or True Blue for a blue one, Scarlet or Vermilion for a red one, Malachite or Bottle Green for a green one.
  • When you name a pond visitor with a child, pick one short word that sounds like the flight, such as Zip, Dash, Flit, Skim or Whirr. Many perching dragonflies come back to the same reed or twig again and again, so the name gets used.
  • Tell the two apart before you choose. Most damselflies are slim and fold their wings along the body at rest, which suits Lady Lilypad, Madame Demoiselle or Bluet; a dragonfly holds its wings out flat and can carry Captain Zigzag or Dragonhunter.
  • For a fantasy setting, use the invented species (Moonlit Demoiselle, Sixpence Skimmer, Lighthouse Dragonfly) and keep the real common names for real insects, so a reader who knows dragonflies is never misled.
  • For a boat, a kayak or a team, look at the phrase names: Reed Runner, Skimmer's Rest and Wing It read well on a hull, and The Fighting Darners or The Pond Rockets on a shirt.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a dragonfly in the garden?

Short, quick words suit an insect that never sits still for long: Zip, Glint, Hover, Skimmie, Flit, Whirlybird or Pondlight. For something grander, try a titled name such as Sir Hover, Lady Jewelwing or Professor Pondsworth.

Which names in this list are real dragonfly species?

Roughly one in seven. Common Green Darner, Twelve-spotted Skimmer, Autumn Meadowhawk, Emperor Dragonfly, Golden-ringed Dragonfly, Banded Demoiselle and Familiar Bluet are all real common names. Names built on storybook words, such as Teacup Darner, Forget-me-not Bluet or Lighthouse Dragonfly, are invented in the same pattern. This page is a name list and not an identification guide, so confirm a species in a field guide before you label a photo.

What are Snake Doctor and Devil's Darning Needle?

They are old folk names for dragonflies in English, and each one is marked as a folk name in the list, along with Mosquito Hawk, Darning Needle and Horse Stinger. They grew out of superstition and the long, needle-like body. Dragonflies have no sting and sew nothing; they hunt mosquitoes and other small flying insects.

What is the word for dragonfly in other languages?

Libellule is French, Libelle German, Libélula Spanish and Portuguese, Libellula Italian, Trollslända Swedish, Strekoza Russian, Tonbo Japanese, Jamjari Korean, Qingting Mandarin Chinese, Tutubi Tagalog and Pinao Hawaiian. All of them are in the list, and Akatonbo is the Japanese word for a red dragonfly.
