500 koala names with an Australian accent: gum-tree names like Blue Gum, Manna and Tallow, places and slang like Noosa, Bindi and Kip, and sleepy, fluffy and gray names such as Forty Winks, Earmuffs and Pewter.

About koala names

A koala is not a bear. It is a marsupial from the eucalyptus forests of eastern and southeastern Australia, it raises a joey in a pouch, and it sleeps through most of the day in the fork of a gum tree, because a diet of eucalyptus leaves gives it very little energy. That makes koala names different from panda or teddy bear names. The good ones come from the gum trees, from Australia itself, and from the animal's two great talents, sleeping and holding on.

So this list starts in the canopy. Blue Gum, Manna, Tallow, River Red and Swamp Mahogany are all trees koalas feed on, and Gumnut, Kino and Scribbly come from the same forest. Then come Australian places (Noosa, Otway, Gunnedah, Pilliga), slang and bush words (Bindi, Matilda, Kip, Cobber, Billabong), and the first names and nicknames a keeper might chalk on an enclosure sign, from Bruce and Sheila to Bazza and Shazza.

The rest is character: sleepy names such as Forty Winks, Doona and Five More Minutes, fluffy and joey names such as Earmuffs, Piggyback and Button Nose, gray coat names such as Pewter and Dust Bunny, bakery and cafe names such as Lamington and Babyccino, and a few jokes, Branch Manager and Not a Bear among them.

How to choose koala names

  • Start with the tree. Gum names such as Blue Gum, Manna, Tallow and Ironbark sound right for a koala and for no other animal.
  • Name a pair or a family from one theme: Bruce and Sheila, Bazza and Shazza, Lamington and Pavlova, Noosa and Byron.
  • For a joey, go small and soft with Gumnut, Pinkie, Bub, Little Mate or Piggyback. For a big old male, a title works: Lord Bluegum, Grandpa Grey, Baron von Snooze.
  • For a zoo naming vote or a classroom mascot, short Australian words are easy for children to say and spell: Kip, Bindi, Joey, Matilda, Cobber.
  • Look up a slang word before you print it on a sign. Most of the slang here is friendly, but a few words, Drongo and Galah among them, are gentle insults at home.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a koala?

Names that point at the gum trees or at Australia tend to fit best: Blue Gum, Manna, Gumnut, Bindi, Matilda, Noosa and Kip are all in this list. For a sleepier feel, try Snooze, Forty Winks or Doona. For a fluffy gray look, try Earmuffs, Pewter or Dusty.

Are koalas bears, and should the name say so?

No. Koalas are marsupials, more closely related to wombats and kangaroos than to any bear, and "koala bear" is an old nickname that stuck. That is why this list leans on eucalyptus and Australian names and keeps bear names to a few jokes, such as Not a Bear and Drop Bear, the fierce tree-dwelling koala that Australians invent to tease visitors.

What do you call a baby koala?

A baby koala is a joey, like the young of kangaroos and other marsupials. It stays in its mother's pouch for about six months and then rides on her back, which is where names such as Little Joey, Pouch, Piggyback, Backpack and Hitchhiker come from.

How is this different from a panda or teddy bear name list?

Panda names lean on doubled Chinese names and black-and-white looks, and teddy bear names lean on old-fashioned first names and honey. The koala names here come from somewhere else: gum trees like Tallow and Ironbark, Australian places like Otway and Pilliga, slang like Cobber and Arvo, and gray, sleepy and pouch names.
