Jungle Book character names from Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and Shere Khan to Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and King Louie, plus new names in the same style, such as Tendua the Leopard, Grey Sister and Nakalchi.

About Jungle book names

Rudyard Kipling named many of the animals in The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book by borrowing an everyday Hindustani word for the creature or for one of its traits. In his own notes Baloo is the bear and Hathi the elephant, Bagheera is tied to bagh, a word for tiger, and Akela means alone. His spellings and glosses are his own, though, and they are not a dictionary: he wrote that Mowgli is a name he made up.

Fewer than a fifth of the names on this page are characters' names from the two books and from the film versions, listed simply as names. They come from the Mowgli stories, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, The White Seal, Toomai of the Elephants and the other tales, with film characters such as King Louie, Shanti and Ranjan among them. It is a reference block, not a full cast list.

Everything else is new and comes from no book or film. These names follow Kipling's method with standard Hindi and Urdu words: animal words paired with the animal (Tendua the Leopard, Koyal the Cuckoo), words for weather, color and character (Toofan, Kohra, Nidar), English epithets in the manner of Father Wolf and Grey Brother, wolves of the Seeonee pack, Bandar-log monkeys, elephant officers, sound-words for small creatures and plain village names.

How to choose Jungle book names

  • Start from the animal. Find the Hindi or Urdu word for the creature or for its main trait, the way Bhalu the Bear and Nevla the Mongoose are built, and look the word up in a dictionary before you use it.
  • Give elders an English epithet and a relation: Father, Mother, Grey, Old. Grandfather Tortoise and Old Tusker sound like the books without borrowing a character.
  • Name a wolf by its place in the pack. Rear Guard of the Pack or Josh of the Seeonee tells a reader more than a sound alone.
  • Let the Bandar-log have names about noise, fruit and forgetting, such as Bhulakkad, Aam-Chor and First to Forget.
  • For fan fiction, keep Kipling's characters as they are and give the new names to your own. A reader should be able to tell which is which.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of the Jungle Book characters?

The best known are Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, Shere Khan, Kaa, Akela, Raksha, Hathi and Tabaqui, with Father Wolf, Mother Wolf and Grey Brother in the wolf family. The Disney films add King Louie, Colonel Hathi, Shanti and Ranjan. Kipling's other stories bring Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, Nag and Nagaina, Kotick the white seal, and Little Toomai with the elephant Kala Nag.

Which names here are from the books and films, and which are new?

Names such as Mowgli, Chil, Mang, Ikki, Darzee and Kotick are characters' names from Kipling's books, and King Louie, Shanti and Ranjan come from the films. Names such as Tendua the Leopard, Grey Sister, Nakalchi and Major Mud-Wallow are new and only follow the style. This is a fan page with no link to any publisher or film studio.

What do the Jungle Book names mean?

Kipling wrote that he took many of them from Hindustani: Baloo for bear, Hathi for elephant and Akela for alone. He also wrote that Mowgli is a name he invented. His spellings are his own, so treat a gloss as his and look the word up before you rely on it.

Can I use these names for a pet, a scout pack or a story?

The new names are meant for your own characters, pets, games and school projects. Akela, Baloo and Bagheera have long been used as leader names in Cub Scout packs, which borrowed them from the books. If you plan to publish, check a name for yourself first, because nothing here has been cleared for commercial use.
