Winnie the Pooh Name Generator
Hundred Acre Wood names for bears, toys and friends
Browse 1,000 Winnie the Pooh style names. The list holds names from the books and films, such as Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Kanga and Roo, and adds original storybook names made the same way, like Squizzle, Hoglet, Porcu and Pine, Wilfred Weevil and The Thinking Log.
About Winnie the Pooh names
A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928) name their animals the way a small child would. Rabbit and Owl are simply the animal word with a capital letter. Kanga and Roo share one word between a mother and her baby. Piglet is a small animal with a small ending, Tigger and Heffalump sound like tiger and elephant said by someone very young, and Eeyore is a donkey's bray written down. Rabbit's smaller relations get a grown-up first name and the creature, as in Alexander Beetle.
Forty-four of the 1,000 names come from the books and from the Disney films and series: character names, places and a few well-known words such as Hunny and Haycorn, given as names only. The rest are new, made up for this page in the same manner. One of them could still match a minor character somewhere by accident.
The new names are mixed through the list: childlike animal words (Squizzle, Caterpillow), shared words for a pair (Porcu and Pine), animal noises (Hootle), small endings (Hoglet, Otterkin), friends and relations (Wilfred Weevil), nursery and woodland words (Conker, Tuppence), temperaments and hums (Bouncer, Tum-Tiddle), map places (The Thinking Log), never-seen beasts (Snufflump) and the tea table (Elevenses, Seed Cake). Grand titles, garden words, wobbly spellings, weather, boats and well-loved toys join them.
How to choose Winnie the Pooh names
- For a pet or a soft toy, start with what the animal is and say the word the way a small child might. Squizzle for a squirrel, Hedgepig for a hedgehog and Ottle for an otter all come from that recipe.
- Naming two at once, such as twin kittens or a mother and baby toy? Share one word between them the way Kanga and Roo do: Chip and Munk, Flam and Ingo, or Tor and Toise.
- Let the temperament pick the name. A bouncy puppy suits Boing or Pounce, a slow and thoughtful one suits Ponder or Amble, a shy one suits Tiptoe or Hush, and a busy one suits Bustle.
- Map names work well on a door sign for a nursery, a reading corner or a den in the garden. Try Nice for Naps, The Warm Patch or The Thinking Log, and draw the map with your child.
- Read the name aloud in a bedtime sentence before you settle on it. Storybook names are heard more than they are seen, so a name that is fun to say, like Tiddlewump or Bleatrix, will last.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Winnie the Pooh character names?
The best-known characters are Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, Roo and Christopher Robin, and Heffalump and Woozle are the best-known creature names. The Disney films and series add Gopher, Lumpy, Kessie, Darby and Buster. All of those names are in this list, which is a starting point for fans and not a full record of the cast.
Which names here are from the stories and which are new?
Forty-four names are from the books and the Disney adaptations. Besides the characters named in the answer above, they are other names for those characters (Pooh Bear, Edward Bear, Mr. Sanders, Sir Pooh de Bear, Henry Pootel, Wol), smaller figures (Small, Alexander Beetle, Uncle Robert, Trespassers William, Trespassers W, Rabbit's Friends and Relations), creatures (Wizzle, Jagular, Backson), places (Hundred Acre Wood, Pooh Corner, Poohsticks Bridge, The Six Pine Trees, Eeyore's Gloomy Place, Galleons Lap, The Wolery, The Chestnuts) and words (Hunny, Haycorn, Smackerel, Tiddely Pom, Expotition). The other names are original ideas in the same style, such as Girafflump, Cuthbert Cricket, Forty Winks or The Humming Stone. They were not checked against every book, film and series, so one may match a minor character by accident. This page is a fan resource with no link to Disney or to the publishers of the books.
How did A. A. Milne name the animals?
Mostly the way a child names toys. Some are the plain animal word (Rabbit, Owl), some are an animal word bent by a young speaker (Tigger, Heffalump, Jagular), and Kanga and Roo split one word in two. The bear's own name joins Winnie, a real bear at London Zoo, and Pooh, the name of a swan, as the first book's introduction tells it. Trespassers W, the name Piglet gives for his grandfather, comes from a broken sign, and names here such as Wet Paint P and Ring Twice R copy that joke.
What is a good Pooh style name for a teddy bear?
Edward Bear and Pooh Bear are the classic choices from the books. For a name of your own, try a nursery word such as Growler, Thimble or Tuppence, a tea table name like Elevenses or Sticky Paws, or a knightly one like Sir Growler de Rug.
