Generate Japanese planet names in romaji with kanji and, for most, a short English gloss: element worlds like Hyosei (氷星, ice), old star names like Subaru, borrowed gods like Tsukuyomi, phrases like Kaze no Hoshi (風の星, world of wind) and colony names like Shin-Izumo.

About Japanese planet names

Japanese names the planets with one character, 星 (sei), after a describing element. Mars is Kasei (火星, fire star), Jupiter is Mokusei (木星, wood star) and Saturn is Dosei (土星, earth star), a set taken from the five elements of Chinese tradition. The same character has a native reading, hoshi, which becomes boshi inside a compound, as in Akaboshi (赤星), a folk name of Antares. Invented worlds can follow either pattern: Hyosei (氷星) for an ice planet, Yukiboshi (雪星) for a softer sound.

The 1,000 names here are in plain Hepburn romaji without macrons, followed by kanji and, where the meaning is clear, a short gloss. About one name in ten ends in sei and fewer in boshi. The rest borrow the way Japanese fiction does: gods and mythic places (Tsukuyomi, Takamagahara), old star names (Subaru, Myojo), poetic sky and weather words (Shinonome, Yunagi), phrases with no Hoshi (Kaze no Hoshi, world of wind), old provinces and Shin colonies (Musashi, Shin-Izumo), numbered worlds (Etchu III) and moons (Gyokuto).

These are ordinary Japanese words and names put to a new use, not official astronomical names. Many already belong to spacecraft, ships or asteroids, Akatsuki, Hayabusa and Ryugu among them. The real planets and Pluto are included and labeled.

How to choose Japanese planet names

  • Match the reading to the tone. Sino-Japanese sei names such as Kongosei and Ankokusei sound official, like entries in a star catalog, while native boshi and no Hoshi names such as Hagureboshi and Shijima no Hoshi sound like folk tales.
  • Name a system as a set. Give the star one borrowed name and number its worlds, as in Etchu III, or spell the order out in Japanese, as in Tone Daisan Wakusei, the third planet of Tone.
  • Check the homophones before you print romaji alone. Suisei is Mercury (水星) and also comet (彗星), and Kasei without its kanji could be several other words, so keep the characters next to any name that matters.
  • Watch the ending boshi. It is hoshi, star, after a sound change, but the same sounds also write 干し, dried: umeboshi is a pickled plum and niboshi a dried sardine, so test a new coinage on a Japanese speaker.
  • Use the moon and small-world names for satellites of a larger world. A pair such as Agyo and Ungyo, the two temple guardians, suits twin moons.

Frequently asked questions

How are planets named in Japanese?

The five planets known since antiquity take one of the five elements plus 星, read sei: Suisei (water), Kinsei (metal), Kasei (fire), Mokusei (wood) and Dosei (earth). Uranus, Neptune and Pluto translate the Western names: Tennosei is the sky king star, Kaiosei the sea king star and Meiosei the star of the king of the underworld. Earth is Chikyu (地球), literally earth globe.

What is the difference between sei, hoshi and boshi?

All three are readings of 星, which covers both star and planet in everyday Japanese. Sei is the Sino-Japanese reading used in the official planet names and in technical words such as wakusei, planet. Hoshi is the native reading, and it turns into boshi when another word comes first, as in Nagareboshi, shooting star, and Mutsuraboshi, an old name of the Pleiades.

Are these real planet names?

Only a few. Suisei, Kinsei, Chikyu, Kasei, Mokusei, Dosei, Tennosei, Kaiosei and Meiosei are the real Japanese names of the planets and Pluto, and the list labels them. Everything else is a Japanese word, phrase, god, province or old star name borrowed as a world's name for fiction, or a new compound built on the sei or boshi pattern, and none of it is an official astronomical name. Several are already in use elsewhere: Akatsuki, Hayabusa and Kaguya are spacecraft, and Yamato and Musashi were battleships.

How reliable are the kanji and glosses?

The glosses translate the characters literally where the meaning is plain, and names of gods and places often get a short label or the kanji alone instead. Long vowels are not marked, so each o in Myojo and the o in Hyosei is long. Before you publish a name, confirm the characters and the reading with a dictionary or a Japanese speaker.
