Generate Irish clan names: early kindreds such as Uí Néill, Cenél Conaill and Dál gCais, Gaelic septs and their branches (O'Neills of Clandeboye, MacCarthy Reagh of Carbery), gallowglass and Gaelicised Norman houses, plus original clans for fiction, each with an English gloss.

About Irish clan names

An Irish clan was a kin group named for an ancestor rather than a place. The oldest names put a collective word in front of the founder's name: Uí (descendants, as in Uí Néill, the descendants of Niall), Cenél (kindred), Clann (children), Síl (seed) and Dál (share or division). Some name whole peoples: the Ulaid, the Laigin, the Múscraige. Once surnames took hold, the leading families became the septs known today in English spelling: O'Brien, MacCarthy, O'Neill. Their branches were told apart by a territory (the O'Neills of Clandeboye) or by an epithet such as Mór (great), Óg (young), Roe (red) or Reagh (brindled).

This list has 1,000 names. Most are historical: early kindreds and peoples in Irish spelling, Gaelic septs and their branches, the gallowglass families who came from western Scotland as hired soldiers (MacSweeney, MacDonnell, MacCabe), and Norman houses, many of which took on Gaelic ways, such as the Burkes of Clanricarde.

Every entry with an English gloss in parentheses, such as Clann na bhFiach (Clan of the Ravens), is an original clan made for fiction, not a historical one. The originals join a collective word such as Clann, Muintir or Síol to an animal, a landscape or a craft. A historical name here is no guide to ancestry: unrelated families often share a surname.

How to choose Irish clan names

  • Pick the period first. An early medieval setting wants the Uí, Cenél and Dál forms (Uí Fidgenti, Cenél nEógain); a story set between about 1200 and 1600 wants surname septs and branches (O'Rourkes of West Breifne, MacSweeney Fanad).
  • Name a branch the historical way: keep the sept name and add a territory or an epithet, as in O'Briens of Ara or O'Driscoll Óg, instead of making up a new surname.
  • Copy an Irish name whole. The extra letters in Dál gCais, Cenél nEógain and Clann Cholmáin are grammar, not typos, and a name rebuilt from parts usually comes out wrong.
  • For an invented clan, start from a glossed original such as Síol na Stoirme (Seed of the Storm). Real kindred names carry real history, and readers who know it will expect your story to match.
  • In running text most entries take 'the': the Uí Maine, the Déisi Muman, the O'Neills of the Fews.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a clan, a sept and a kindred?

Sept is the usual English word for an Irish family group that shared a surname, an ancestor and a chief, like the O'Dohertys of Inishowen. Kindred or dynasty is used for the older and larger groups, such as Cenél Conaill or the Eóganachta, from which many septs descended. Clan comes from the Irish clann, children, and this generator uses it loosely for all of them.

Which names in the list are historical and which are invented?

Entries with an English gloss in parentheses are original, for example Clann an Cheo (Clan of the Mist) and Muintir na nOileán (People of the Islands). Entries without a gloss come from the historical record, such as Uí Maine, Dál Fiatach, O'Connor Don and the Fitzgeralds of Desmond, or in a few cases from early Irish legend and origin tales, such as the Fir Bolg and Clann Baíscne. An original name can still happen to match a real place or family, and any historical name is worth confirming in a reference work before you use it for research.

Does the generator give tartans, crests or mottoes?

No. The list is names only. Clan tartans are a Scottish tradition, and the historical Irish clans did not have them.

Can I use these names for a novel, a guild or a tabletop campaign?

Yes. The historical names suit historical fiction and family-history flavor, and branch names like MacDermots of Moylurg show how a sept was tied to its land. For a made-up setting, the glossed originals keep your story clear of a real family's history.
