The Minamoto, Taira, Fujiwara and Tachibana (the four great surnames of the court), the Ashikaga and Tokugawa shogunal houses, and the Sengoku-period powers Oda, Toyotomi, Takeda, Uesugi, Hojo, Mori, Shimazu, Date, Imagawa and Chosokabe. The Hojo of Kamakura, the Soga and Mononobe of ancient Japan, and ninja families like Hattori are also widely known.

Almost all are two kanji, usually a modifier plus a landscape word: field (ta/da), river (kawa/gawa), mountain (yama), island (shima), rice paddy, bridge, well or shrine. The family name comes first (Oda Nobunaga, not Nobunaga Oda), and the clan itself is referred to as the Oda, Oda-ke (house) or Oda-shi (clan).

Yes. Clan and family names are not protected, and most Japanese fiction does this freely. Be aware that the biggest names (Tokugawa, Oda, Fujiwara) carry strong historical associations, while lesser-known real clans such as Nejime, Hishikari or Amenomori read as authentic without implying a link to famous events. Canon clans from specific series (Uchiha, Hyuga) are another matter and are best left as inspiration.

Historians use clan (uji) for the ancient lineages like Soga or Fujiwara, and house (ke) or family for the medieval and early-modern warrior families like Takeda or Shimazu, which were themselves branches of an older uji. In everyday English all three are called clans, and this generator uses the word in that broad sense.
