Irish Boat Name Generator
Names from Ireland's coast, legends and language
Boat names with Irish roots, in Irish and in English: Irish-language names with short meanings such as Réalt na Mara (star of the sea) and Saoirse (freedom), legend names like Wave Sweeper, coast names like Skellig Star and Fastnet Light, and gentle puns like Shamrock and Roll.
About Irish boat names
Boats around the Irish coast tend to carry a saint's name, a family name, a place on the shore or a word in Irish, and this list of 1,000 follows those habits. Nearly one name in five is in Irish, each with a short English meaning in parentheses: Réalt na Mara (star of the sea), Saoirse (freedom), Cóir Ghaoithe (fair wind). The rest are English names with an Irish theme.
The sea runs through Irish legend, so many names come from it: Manannán mac Lir, the sea god whose boat was called Wave Sweeper, the Children of Lir, Clíodhna's Wave, and Niamh, who carried Oisín to Tír na nÓg. Saints of the coast follow, led by Brendan the Navigator, then islands, headlands, harbors, loughs and rivers, traditional ballads and tunes, and emerald, shamrock, harp and Claddagh names.
Some names refer to traditional craft. A currach is a light rowing boat of tarred canvas over a wooden frame, called a naomhóg in Kerry. A Galway hooker is a black-hulled sailing workboat with dark red-brown sails, and a gleoiteog is one of its smaller classes. There are also names for a Shannon cruiser, names in the style of a western fishing boat, and gentle puns such as Shamrock and Roll. A few historic names say so in parentheses, such as Granuaile.
How to choose Irish boat names
- Copy an Irish-language name letter for letter. The accent (the fada) and the changes at the start of a word are grammar: it is Réalt na Mara and Fear an Bháid, and swapping in another word by guesswork usually produces a mistake.
- Ask an Irish speaker before the name is painted on. A teacher, a relative from the Gaeltacht or a local Irish-language group can confirm the wording and tell you how it is said.
- Say the name aloud as a radio call. Skellig Star, Fastnet Light and Kittiwake carry well; a name that is hard to spell out to a harbor master will need repeating every time.
- Match the name to the water. Shannon Heron or Lazy Lock suits a river cruiser, Western Dawn or Mary Ellen a fishing boat, and Wave Sweeper or Clíodhna's Wave a sailing boat.
- If you plan to register the boat, read the register's rules on names first. This list was not compared with any register, so a name here may already be in use on another boat.
Frequently asked questions
What are some Irish names for a boat?
Irish-language choices in this list include Réalt na Mara (star of the sea), Saoirse (freedom), Aisling (dream, vision) and Ceol na Mara (music of the sea). In English, names such as Skellig Star, Emerald Lady, Wave Sweeper and Queen of Connemara carry the same roots.
What does Réalt na Mara mean?
It means star of the sea, an old title of the Virgin Mary that is also said in Latin as Stella Maris. Both forms are in the list, along with Mary Star of the Sea.
What are a currach, a hooker and a gleoiteog?
All three are traditional Irish boats. A currach is a light open boat of tarred canvas stretched over a wooden frame, a Galway hooker is a heavy sailing workboat from Galway Bay and Connemara, and a gleoiteog is a smaller boat of the hooker family. Names such as Currach Racer, Galway Hooker and Gleoiteog (small Galway hooker) refer to them.
Can I change a word in one of the Irish names?
It is safer not to. Irish nouns change form inside a phrase: mara comes from muir (sea), and bád (boat) becomes an bháid in Fear an Bháid (the boatman). Take a name as it is written here, or pick an English one, and confirm any Irish wording with a fluent speaker.
