Scottish clan names for novels, tabletop games and gaming groups: historical clans carry the label (real), as in Clan MacLeod of Lewis (real), beside invented ones such as Clan MacBrannoch of Glen Tarrin, Clan Dunmoray and Sept Kinlossie of Clan MacRuarnie.

About Scottish clan names

Clan comes from the Gaelic clann, children. A Highland clan was a kin group and its followers under a chief, usually named for an ancestor: MacDonald is son of Donald, and in Gaelic the clan is Clann Dòmhnaill. Lowland and Border families are counted as clans today, though they were long called houses, names or riding surnames. A branch is known by its land (the MacLeods of Lewis, the Kerrs of Ferniehirst), and a sept is a family that follows a larger clan.

Roughly one entry in five is a historical clan, branch or kindred, and each ends in a label that begins with the word real, as in Clan Fraser of Lovat (real) or Clan Chattan (real confederation). Everything without the label is invented for fiction. Invented clans use made-up Mac names and made-up glens, lochs and islands, and none is given a real clan's seat, chief, motto or tartan. Scotland has a great many surnames and place names, so an invented name can still happen to match a real family or farm.

The invented names cover Highland Mac clans, clans named for a place, Border riding families and their graynes (branches), Norse-Gael island kindreds, septs and cadet houses, confederations, Lowland families styled "of that Ilk", kindreds named for a founding ancestor, and fantasy-leaning houses.

How to choose Scottish clan names

  • Skip every entry marked (real) if your story needs a clan with no history attached. Keep them if you want a real clan as a backdrop, and read up on it first.
  • Give an invented clan a home by adding "of" and a place: Clan MacCalvie of Loch Sionn sounds settled in a way a bare surname does not.
  • Build a family tree from pairs in the list. Clan Kinvarrow and Sept Gilvarrie of Clan Kinvarrow belong together, and a cadet house or a younger line gives you a ready rival.
  • Match the form to the region: Mac clans and Sliochd names for the Gaelic Highlands, riding names and graynes for the Borders, names in -son and -voe for the far north.
  • Before you use an invented name for a society, a product or a tartan, search it yourself: a real family or estate may already bear it.

Frequently asked questions

Which names on the list are real Scottish clans?

Only the entries whose label in parentheses begins with real. They include clans such as Clan Campbell (real) and Clan Gordon (real), branches such as The Camerons of Lochiel (real), Gaelic forms such as Clann Dòmhnaill (real) and the confederation Clan Chattan (real confederation). Four early kindreds of Dál Riata and the Siol Alpin tradition carry a longer label of their own. Some clans appear more than once: under their English name, their Gaelic name and the name of the chief's house, as with Clan Robertson (real), Clan Donnachaidh (real) and The Robertsons of Struan (real).

Are the unlabeled clans historical?

No. Names such as Clan MacBrannoch of Glen Tarrin, The Brackenhopes of the Mirk Water and Clan Skeldersay were made up for fiction, and so were their glens, waters and islands. They follow real naming patterns, so one may by chance match a real surname or place. That is not a claim that such a clan ever existed.

What is the difference between a clan, a sept and a cadet branch?

A clan is the whole kin group under a chief. A sept is a family, often with a different surname, that follows a clan, and a cadet branch descends from a younger son of the chiefly line and is usually known by its land. In the list, Sept Gilfarran of Clan Dunmoray and Cadet House of Wester Dalharn show the two forms.

Can I use one of these names for a gaming clan or a novel?

Yes for the invented ones, which is what they are for. A real clan name belongs to living families and often to a clan society, so for a guild, a reenactment group or a book it is kinder to pick an unlabeled name. Do not attach a real clan's crest, motto or tartan to an invented name.
