Inklings are the squid-kids of Nintendo's Splatoon series, and their names follow the same rule as almost everything else in Inkopolis and Splatsville: nearly every name is a pun. The Squid Sisters are Callie and Marie (say them together), Off the Hook's Pearl and Marina are ocean references, Deep Cut's Shiver, Frye, and Big Man come from sashimi, fried fish, and manta rays, and NPCs like Sheldon, Crusty Sean, Jelonzo, and Spyke are all seafood or shellfish jokes. Even the in-game slang (booyah, woomy, veemo, ngyes) is part of the naming culture that fans use for original characters.

When you name your own Inkling or Octoling, you have four reliable sources to pull from: sea creatures and seafood dishes (Nori, Cala Mari, Anchovi), ink and color words (Sepia, Cyan Cy, Magenta Max), Splatoon weapons and modes (Roller Rae, Charger Chaz, Salmon Run Ronnie), and pop-culture puns squid-ified in the style of the game's band names (Ink Floyd, Squid Vicious, Billie Inklish). Japanese words for ocean, squid, and ink (Umi, Ika, Sumi) also fit, since Splatoon's aesthetic borrows heavily from Tokyo street culture.

A good Inkling name is short, upbeat, and lands the pun on the first read. In Splatoon 3 the in-game name limit is 10 characters, so many players use a longer full name for their OC and a punchy nickname like Squidge or Woomy for the actual game.
