For original Inklings and Octolings, three approaches work well. The first is a sea-creature or seafood pun on a human name (Squidney, Octavia, Marlin, Finley). The second is an ink or colour word turned into a name (Inkabelle, Magenta, Blotch, Splatty). The third borrows Japanese words for sea life and ocean things, matching the game's roots: Ika (squid), Tako (octopus), Sumi (ink), Sango (coral), Nami (wave), Uni (sea urchin). Short names of one to three syllables fit the game's ten-character nickname limit and look right on a Turf War scoreboard.

The list also includes fandom in-jokes like Woomy, Veemo and Booyah, plus Salmon Run boss names, so you can name a Grizzco crew or a Splatfest team as easily as a single character.
