Generate hostnames that are short, lowercase and valid in DNS: themed sets of gods, moons, stars, elements, birds and scientists for individual machines, plus structured role-based names for fleets and a handful of homelab favorites. Every name types cleanly over SSH.
About hostname names
A hostname is the label a machine answers to on the network, and the rules are stricter than for almost any other kind of name: letters, digits and hyphens only, no leading or trailing hyphen, 63 characters per label and, in practice, lowercase and short enough to type without thinking. Everything in this list already obeys those rules, so you can drop a name straight into /etc/hostname, a cloud console or a DHCP reservation.
For machines humans touch regularly, the advice from RFC 1178 has held up for decades: pick a theme with plenty of members and avoid names that describe the machine's job or hardware. A box called webserver becomes a lie the day it starts running the build queue, while heimdall or ganymede keeps working no matter what you install. Themes that scale well are Norse and Greek gods, planets and moons, named stars, chemical elements, birds, trees and dead computer scientists,, and several of those sets are laid out here in full.
Large fleets are the exception: when instances are created by automation and rarely typed by hand, a structured scheme like env-role-number (prod-api-01, edge-nyc-01) is easier to filter and search. A block of those is included too, alongside the kind of names homelabbers actually give their NAS, Pi cluster and hypervisor.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose a theme with more members than you currently need. Moons of Jupiter, elements and Greek gods give you dozens of names; a favorite band with four members does not.
- Keep hostnames lowercase, alphanumeric and under 15 characters if any Windows or NetBIOS devices share the network, since NetBIOS truncates longer names.
- Do not encode role, location or specs in the hostname of a machine people type by hand. Put that metadata in DNS records, tags or your inventory system instead.
- Use nested themes to show relationships: a hypervisor named jupiter with VMs io, europa, ganymede and callisto is self-documenting to anyone new on the team.
- Reserve structured names (prod-web-01, k8s-node-02) for auto-provisioned fleets where grep-ability matters more than memorability, and keep the numbering zero-padded.
Frequently asked questions
What characters are allowed in a hostname?
Valid hostnames use only the letters a-z, digits 0-9 and hyphens. A label cannot begin or end with a hyphen, each label is limited to 63 characters, and the full DNS name to 253. Underscores, spaces and most punctuation are not valid, which is why every name in this list is plain lowercase text, optionally with hyphens and digits.
Should a hostname describe what the server does?
Only for large, automated fleets. For machines that people log into by name, a neutral themed name ages far better: roles change, hardware gets swapped, and renaming a host means updating DNS, certificates, configs and monitoring everywhere. If you need the role visible, put it in a DNS CNAME (mail.example.com pointing at thor) rather than the hostname itself.
What is the difference between a hostname and a domain name?
The hostname is the first label that identifies a single machine, such as thor. The domain name is the part that follows, such as example.com, and together they form the fully qualified domain name thor.example.com. This generator produces the machine part; pair it with your own domain or a local suffix like .lan or .home.arpa.
Are these names good for virtual machines and containers too?
Yes. VMs and long-lived containers follow the same hostname rules, and themed names work well for anything you will reference by name. Short-lived containers created by an orchestrator are usually better left with generated names, since nobody types them and they are replaced constantly.
