Race Track Name Generator

Real race tracks are named by a simple formula: a place plus a word that tells you what kind of racing happens there. The place is usually a town, county, landform or nearby water (Thunder Ridge, Cedar Falls, Bear Creek), and the type word carries the rest. In America, Speedway means an oval, Superspeedway a big one, Raceway or Raceway Park a multi-use facility, Motorsports Park or Motorplex a complex with several tracks, Dragway a quarter-mile strip, and Fairgrounds Speedway a dirt oval on county fair land. Road courses borrow European words: Circuit, Road Course, or the German -ring.

Outside the US the pattern is the same in other languages. Italian and Latin American tracks are Autodromo or Autódromo, French ones are Circuit de or Circuit plus a person's name, Japanese tracks favour Ring, Circuit or Speedway after a region, and Australian ones add Motorsport Park or Raceway. Horse racing uses its own set: Downs, Park, Racecourse and Heath for flat tracks, Trotting Park for harness racing.

A convincing fictional track copies one of these templates exactly, then adds colour through the place name or a sponsor (Hadley Memorial Speedway, Ironclad Tire Raceway). Nicknames like The Bullring or The Paperclip are earned by layout, so use them as a second name rather than the official one.
