Horse Herd Name Generator

Real wild horse herds are almost always named for the ground they cover. The Bureau of Land Management tracks mustangs by Herd Management Area, so the famous ones carry place names: Pryor Mountain, Sand Wash Basin, Onaqui, Salt River, the Kiger range. Within an area, observers name the smaller family bands after the lead stallion or the oldest mare (Cloud's band, Old Smoke's bachelors), and a name that follows that pattern sounds authentic at once. Australian brumbies run in mobs, island herds like Chincoteague and Sable Island are known by their islands, and working ranches call their string of saddle horses a remuda and their mares a broodmare band.

Fictional herds borrow those conventions and add colour. A herd in a novel, a Star Stable or Horse Valley club, or a Warriors-style horse story usually gets a compound built from what the horses look like or where they run: Thunderhoof, Greymane, Red Desert Band, the Ghost Horses of Salt Flat. Coat words (roan, dun, buckskin, sorrel, dapple), weather, and landscape features do most of the work, and the noun at the end, herd, band, mob or mustangs, tells the reader what kind of group it is.
