Herd Name Generator

A herd name does two jobs. On a working farm it is the prefix that goes in front of every animal's registered name, so a doe called Juniper from the Willow Creek herd is recorded as Willow Creek Juniper. Registries such as ADGA for goats, the breed associations for cattle and sheep, and the alpaca registries all let you reserve one, usually capped at around 30 characters and required to be unique, which is why most real herd names are short place-style phrases: Misty Hollow, Oak Knoll, Sweetgrass, Kidsgrove. Cattle operations lean on brand language instead, with Rocking R, Lazy J, Bar Seven, and Running Iron echoing the mark burned on the hide.

Wild and fictional herds follow different rules. Real mustang bands are named for the range they roam (Pryor Mountain, Sand Wash, Onaqui, Chincoteague), and writers borrow that pattern or go for mane-and-hoof compounds like Thunderhoof, Greymane, and Dawnrunner for horse, unicorn, or elk herds in fantasy settings. Bison, elephant, and deer herds in fiction are usually named after a matriarch, a landmark, or a season.
