Historical Event Name Generator
Riots, coups, councils and omens for your timeline
Generate names for the events on a fictional timeline, from The Lamplighters' Strike and The Defenestration of Karvald to The Council of Nine Bells and The Saffron Bubble. The list of 1,000 covers riots, coups, councils, great fires, coronations, trials, omens and crashes for fantasy worlds and alternate histories.
About historical event names
History books name events in a handful of ways, and an invented timeline feels real when it uses all of them. The commonest is kind plus place: the Great Fire of London, the Defenestration of Prague. Others name the thing at stake, as the South Sea Bubble does, or simply fix a date. English statutes were long cited by the year of the monarch's reign, which is why a dry entry such as The Coinage Act of 6 Halvoran sounds like a real record.
This list holds 1,000 single events for a fictional world or an alternate history, most of them not battles: riots, strikes and panics; coups and palace plots; councils, synods and edicts; fires, floods and hard winters; coronations, abdications and royal weddings; voyages, foundings and inventions; trials and scandals; exiles and returns; omens and miracles; bubbles, crashes and debased coins. There are also days and nights that earned a nickname, and bare chronicle entries with a year.
The places and rulers are invented and recur on purpose, so Low Harbor, Karvald and Queen Isaveth turn up in several entries and a few rerolls already sketch a history. Swap in your own names freely. Wars, treaties, plagues and festivals have generators of their own.
How to choose historical event names
- Decide who named the event. People who lived through it use plain labels like The Wendrow Lockout; later chroniclers add judgment, as in The Coup Nobody Noticed.
- Borrow the pattern and swap the proper nouns. Kind plus place, trade plus action, or a year plus a flat statement all work with your own cities and rulers.
- Give a big event two names: the official one, such as Edict of Silent Bells, and whatever the street called it. A history that is argued over feels lived in.
- Chain events into causes and effects. A debased coin leads to a bread panic, the panic to a strike, the strike to an edict; pick three names and put them in order.
- Keep the dry dated forms for the written timeline and save the nicknamed days and nights for dialogue, where characters say what they remember.
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of events does this generator name?
Single events on a timeline rather than long ages or whole wars. You will find street unrest like The Lamplighters' Strike, palace violence like The Defenestration of Karvald, church and state business like The Council of Nine Bells, and money troubles like The Saffron Bubble, along with fires, floods, coronations, trials, voyages and omens.
Are any of these real historical events?
They are meant to be invented: the places and rulers are made up, and only the naming patterns come from real history. The list is screened for duplicates, not compared entry by entry with the historical record, so search a name yourself before you rely on it being fictional.
Can I use these names for an alternate history instead of a fantasy world?
Yes. Entries such as The Karvald Ultimatum, The Vessenmark Telegram and The General Strike of Low Harbor read like the nineteenth or twentieth century, and the dated chronicle forms fit any period. Replace the invented places with the ones in your own timeline.
Where do I find names for wars, battles and treaties?
This page keeps mostly to events that are not military. The site has separate generators for wars, battles, treaties, rebellions and plagues, and an era generator for the long ages that lie between the events named here.
