Generate names for events in the sky: eclipses like The Hollow Sun and Black Noon, meetings of planets like The Crimson Conjunction and The Lantern Alignment, auroras like The Green Curtains, omens like The Vermilion Portent, and sci-fi log entries like Syzygy Log 12-Theta. Built for worldbuilding calendars, prophecies and mission logs.

About celestial event names

A celestial event name labels an occasion in the sky, not the body that causes it. Fiction tends to name such events the way chroniclers do, by what people saw: The Hollow Sun, Black Noon, The Day the Birds Fell Silent. Courts and temples name them by what they feared or hoped, which gives The Vermilion Portent or The Mandate Withdrawn. Farmers and sailors use plain almanac names, such as Spring Equal-Night or The Day Without Shadow.

The real vocabulary is worth borrowing. A conjunction is two bodies appearing close together, a syzygy is three in a line, a transit is a small body crossing the face of a larger one, and an occultation is one body hiding another. Meteor showers are named for the constellation their meteors seem to stream from, which is why the Perseids point back to Perseus. "Guest star" is the old Chinese court term for a star that appears where none was seen before.

The list of 1,000 mixes these registers: eclipses, conjunctions, alignments, transits, auroras, new stars, halos and omens, folk full-moon names, colony slang for worlds with two suns or rings, and catalogue-style entries for science fiction logs such as Syzygy Log 12-Theta. About one name in nine is a real term, from Perseids to Transit of Venus.

How to choose celestial event names

  • Decide who is naming the event. A village says The Wolf's Mouthful, a temple says The Omen of the Bleeding Disc, and an observatory writes Occultation OC-77 Kappa. The same eclipse can carry all three names in one world.
  • Name the occasion first and decide the cause later. The Year of Two Dawns works as a hook in a timeline before you know whether it was a new star, a comet or a second sun.
  • Use rarity to set the scale. Folk moons such as Hay Moon come every year, a pairing like The Nine-Year Meeting returns on a cycle, and The Alignment of the Last Age should happen once in a campaign.
  • For science fiction logs, change the numbers and site names to fit your setting. The catalogue-style entries are fictional formats, so give them a consistent prefix system of your own.
  • If your world has its own constellations, rename the showers after them. A shower called The Kestrelids implies a constellation called the Kestrel, which is a free piece of worldbuilding.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for an eclipse in a fantasy world?

Names that describe what people saw tend to stick: The Hollow Sun, Black Noon, The Long Eclipse, The Bitten Disc and The Day the Birds Fell Silent are all in the list. For a lunar eclipse, a color name such as The Copper Eclipse or The Scarlet Eclipse fits, because the eclipsed Moon usually turns a dull red.

Which names in the list are real?

The meteor showers Perseids, Leonids, Geminids, Quadrantids, Lyrids, Eta Aquariids, Orionids, Taurids, Ursids and Draconids are real, as are terms such as Transit of Venus, Great Conjunction, Baily's Beads, Carrington Event and Lahaina Noon. So are the plain eclipse types, the oppositions, elongations and occultations of named planets and stars, Tycho's Supernova, Kepler's Supernova and Return of Halley's Comet. The folk full-moon names from Wolf Moon to Moon After Yule come from the almanac tradition. The other names are written for fiction, though some borrow real observing words, and none of them is a prediction or a record of a real event.

Are any names taken from existing fiction?

Four are included on purpose as references rather than original ideas: Sozin's Comet and The Day of Black Sun come from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Harmonic Convergence is the name The Legend of Korra uses for its planetary alignment (the phrase was first used for a 1987 New Age gathering), and The Conjunction of the Spheres from The Witcher. Use them for fan works, and pick from the rest of the list for your own setting.

What is the difference between a conjunction and an alignment?

A conjunction is two or more bodies appearing close together in the sky, as in The Kiss of the Two Lamps or The Gathering of Five. An alignment suggests several bodies in a row, as in The String of Pearls or The Alignment of Nine, and the technical word for a straight line of three bodies is syzygy. Writers tend to use conjunctions for recurring calendar marks and alignments for once-in-an-age events.
