About era names

Era names are how a fictional world remembers itself. Real histories give the pattern: the Bronze Age and Iron Age are named for a defining material, the Warring States period for what people did, the Elizabethan era for who ruled, the Dark Ages and the Enlightenment for how later generations judged them. Tolkien's First, Second and Third Ages count from cataclysms, and most fantasy follows him: an age runs from one world-changing event to the next, and the event itself often gets a name too, like the Sundering or the Breaking.

The strongest era names do two jobs at once. They tell you what the period felt like and hint at why it ended. 'The Age of Ash' implies a fire before it; 'The Years Without Kings' implies a throne that was eventually filled; 'The Long Winter' promises a thaw. Names given by the people living through an age tend to be plain (the Great Peace, the Plague Years), while names given afterward are judgmental or poetic (the Leaden Century, the False Dawn). Deciding who named the era, and when, is half the lore.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name an era for what defined it and let the name imply the transition: the Age of Ash suggests a burning before it and a rebuilding after.
  • Vary the grammar across a timeline. Follow an 'Age of' with an event name like the Sundering, a nickname like the Candle Years and a political label like the Long Regency.
  • Decide who named the era. Contemporaries use plain names (the Great Peace); later chroniclers use judgments (the Leaden Century), and a world can hold both for the same span.
  • Anchor numbered ages to a cataclysm or founding that everyone would count from, and keep the count small; few readers remember a Fourteenth Age.
  • Give each major era one event, one ruler or one invention that characters can mention in passing, so the name carries weight when it appears in dialogue.

What is the difference between an age, an era and an epoch?

In everyday worldbuilding they overlap, but a useful convention is: an age is the longest span, often ended by a cataclysm; an era is a period defined by a ruler, culture or technology; an epoch is a shorter stretch marked by one event. Pick a hierarchy and stick to it in your timeline.

How long should a fantasy era be?

Long enough that the generations inside it share a way of life. Tolkien's ages run thousands of years; real-world eras like the Victorian period run decades. A mix works well: a few multi-century ages broken by short, violently named periods such as the Scouring or the Bone Winter.

How do I name ages without every one being 'The Age of X'?

Use the event that ended or began it (the Sundering), a nickname for how it felt (the Candle Years), a political form (the Long Regency, the Interregnum of Thorns), a count (the Third Age) or a judgment made later (the False Dawn). This generator mixes all of those forms.

Should era names be in-world or author names?
