About hacker group names

Real hacker groups have named themselves in a handful of recognizable ways, and each style sends a different signal.   • Keep leetspeak light. One or two substitutions (Ph4ntom Cr3w) read as a nod to the scene; replacing every vowel makes the name hard to say out loud at a competition.
  • Check the scoreboard. CTF platforms and Discord servers are full of teams named after the same few vulnerabilities, so search your pick before you register it.
  • For fiction, decide who named the group. A self-chosen name is boastful or ironic; a codename assigned by investigators is clinical, like an animal paired with a color or texture.
  • Avoid names that are close to a real active threat actor. Borrowing the name of a known criminal gang for your team can cause confusion with security researchers and platform moderators.
