Dog names taken from cars, not names for dogs that like a ride: makes such as Shelby, Royce and Aston, models such as Miata, Nova and Stelvio, parts such as Clutch, Piston and Gasket, and racing words such as Rally, Apex and Chicane. Each is one or two words.

About car dog names

A car name works on a dog for the reason it works on a badge: it is short and it was made to be said out loud. Every entry here is a make, a model, a part or a piece of garage and racing talk used as a plain dog name, in one or two words, with no link to any carmaker.

The list moves between fifteen kinds of name. There are American classics (Camaro, Chevelle, Fury), American makes old and new (Packard, Nash, Stutz), European makes (Aston, Lancia, Saab), British models (Elise, Spitfire, Husky), Italian models (Giulia, Miura, Stratos), German and French models (Carrera, Twingo, Polo), Japanese and Korean cars (Miata, Supra, Celica), trucks and 4x4s (Tacoma, Rubicon, Bronco), engine parts (Piston, Gasket, Hemi), body and trim (Fender, Hubcap, Chrome), garage slang (Jalopy, Ratchet, Dipstick), racing words (Rally, Apex, Chicane), circuits and corners (Monza, Suzuka, Sebring), body styles and trims (Coupe, Targa, Hellcat) and road and fuel words (Diesel, Octane, Detour).

The names every dog park already knows, such as Bentley, Diesel, Turbo and Cooper, are a small share. Most of the list is the long tail, plus the short forms owners use for their cars: Vette, Cuda, Caddy, Landy and Trabi. Names are spelled the usual English way, without accent marks.

How to choose car dog names

  • Say it out loud before you decide. One or two syllables with a hard first sound, such as Dino, Nitro, Turbo and Tucker, carry across a park. A long one like Studebaker or Duesenberg needs a call name, and Studie and Duesy are in the list for that.
  • Keep clear of names that sound like commands. Noble and Nova start like 'no', Dawn sits close to 'down' and Wheels sounds a lot like 'heel'.
  • Pick the car that means something to you: your first car, the truck the dog rides in, the model you have been restoring for years. It gives you a story when someone asks about the name.
  • Match the sound to the dog. Titan, Tundra, Hemi, Kodiak and Mack have weight for a big dog, while Mini, Sprite, Elf, Imp and Kitten sit lightly on a small one.
  • Naming two dogs? Car names pair up well: Rolls and Royce, Alfa and Romeo, Spark and Plug, Hot Rod and Rat Rod.

Frequently asked questions

What are cool car names for dogs?

Short makes and models with a strong first sound tend to work as call names. Shelby, Royce, Aston, Enzo, Miata, Lotus and Carrera are all in the list, and so are part names such as Clutch, Piston, Axle and Gasket. Names that end in an open vowel, like Enzo, Supra and Tacoma, are the easiest to call.

Are these all real cars and car terms?

The list is meant to hold only real makes, models, owners' nicknames, parts, circuits and garage or racing terms, with nothing invented. It does not set out to name racing drivers: where a make is a founder's surname, such as Shelby, Ferrari and Porsche, it is here as the make. The list was screened, so look a name up if the car behind it matters to you.

Which car names suit a girl dog or a boy dog?

Plenty of makes and models are given names already. For a girl there are Mercedes, Giulia, Elise, Lola, Sienna, Zoe, Octavia, Silvia and Gloria. For a boy there are Royce, Enzo, Cedric, Tucker, Hudson, Nash and Dino. Most part and racing names, such as Clutch, Rally and Apex, suit either.

Can a car part be a dog name?

Yes. Part names are short and end on a hard sound, which makes them clear to call. Piston, Gasket, Sprocket, Axle, Hubcap, Fender and Ratchet are all in the list. Garage slang works the same way: Jalopy, Clunker and Dipstick suit a dog with a sense of humor.
