A cute nickname works because it is softer and smaller than the name it replaces. The classic way to make one from a first name is to keep one or two syllables and add a friendly ending: Charlotte becomes Lottie, Benjamin becomes Benji, Theodore becomes Teddy, Penelope becomes Penny or Poppy. Doubling a syllable is the other reliable trick, which is how Lucy turns into Lulu, Josephine into Jojo, Sophia into Fifi and Zoe into Zozo. Older English swaps also produce some of the cutest results, like Peggy and Daisy from Margaret, Polly from Mary, Hal from Henry and Bitsy from Beatrice.

The second family of cute nicknames has nothing to do with your name at all. These are the pet names parents, partners and best friends hand out: small foods (Peanut, Cupcake, Dumpling, Mochi), small creatures (Junebug, Duckling, Chipmunk, Lambchop), sweet things (Honey Bun, Sugarplum, Buttercup) and pure nonsense that sounds affectionate (Pookie, Snookums, Boo). The test is simple: would it sound right said softly to someone you like?
