About Uncle names

An uncle's name is usually settled by the first niece or nephew who can talk, which is how a grown man called Christopher ends up as Unkie or Nunu for life. If you would rather have a say, there are four common routes. The plain one is Uncle plus a first name or a family nickname: Uncle Walter, Uncle Mateo, Uncle Bubba. The heritage route uses the family's own language, alone or with a name: Tío Paco, Zio Peppe, Tonton Jacques, Onkel Heinz, Tito Jun.

Many languages are more exact than English and have different words for a mother's brother and a father's brother. Arabic has Khalo (maternal) and Ammo (paternal), Turkish has Dayı and Amca, Swedish has Morbror and Farbror, Finnish has Eno and Setä, and Polish traditionally has Wujek and Stryjek. Hindi goes further: Mama is a mother's brother, Chacha a father's younger brother and Tau his older one. Word order changes too. Turkish, Hungarian, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and Korean put the name first, as in Mehmet Amca, Pista bácsi, Ramesh Chacha and Minho Samchon.

Short forms are the toddler-proof option (Unc, Unkie, Nunu, Uncie). The fourth route is a title for the uncle who takes the job seriously: Funcle, Uncle Grill, Uncle Road Trip, Chief Fun Officer.

How to choose Uncle names

  • Ask which side of the family he is on before you pick a heritage word. In Arabic a mother's brother is Khalo and a father's brother is Ammo, in Turkish they are Dayı and Amca, and in Korean a mother's brother is Oesamchon. The grandparents will notice the wrong one at once.
  • Test it on a toddler's mouth. Two syllables with a repeated sound win: Nunu, Unkie, Tito, Chachu. If the family settles on Great-Uncle Bertram, expect it to be Unc within a year.
  • With several uncles, give each one a different pattern instead of numbering them: one is Uncle Doug, one is Tío Rafa, one is Unc. Some languages have birth-order words for this, such as Malay Pak Long for the eldest uncle and Pak Su for the youngest.
  • Skip a name that already belongs to a famous uncle. Uncle Sam will get the same joke at every family gathering, and the name stops being his.
  • Honorary uncles count. In many families a close friend of the parents is called uncle, and a name like Bonus Uncle, Uncle by Choice or plain Uncle plus his first name makes the role clear without confusing the family tree.

What do you call an uncle in other languages?

Spanish and Portuguese use Tío and Tio, Italian Zio, French Oncle or the familiar Tonton, German Onkel, Dutch Oom, Filipino Tito and Hawaiian Anakala. Many languages split the word by side of the family: Khalo and Ammo in Arabic, Dayı and Amca in Turkish, Jiujiu and Shushu in Mandarin, Mama and Chacha in Hindi. Most of these words are in the list alone, and many also come with a first name in the order that language uses. Words from other alphabets are given in common romanized spellings, so use the spelling your own family prefers.

What is a great-uncle called?

In English both great-uncle and granduncle are correct for a grandparent's brother, and a great-great-uncle is one generation further back. Most families simply say Uncle plus his name, or keep the full form for fun, which is why the list has a run of older names such as Great-Uncle Bertram, Great-Uncle Thaddeus and Granduncle Elias.
