Generate names for gods and goddesses of life, creation, birth and healing: makers of the first people like Orvash the Clay-Handed, midwives like Benwyra the Cord-Cutter, healers like Thalen the Mender, title-only powers like The First Midwife and Lord of the Second Dawn, and attested deities such as Khnum (Egyptian) and Eir (Norse).

About god of life names

Life is rarely one god's job. In Egyptian myth Khnum shapes each person on a potter's wheel while frog-headed Heqet attends the birth. Mesopotamian mother goddesses such as Ninhursag knead the first people from clay. The Greeks gave childbirth to Eileithyia and medicine to Asclepius, whose daughters include Hygieia and Panacea, and the Norse named Eir among their healers. A pantheon you invent can split the work the same way.

The 1,000 names here follow those jobs: makers who shaped the first people (Orvash the Clay-Handed, Father Kiln), birth and midwife goddesses (Benwyra the Cord-Cutter, The First Midwife), healers and plague-breakers (Thalen the Mender, Asclera Plague-Breaker), gods of breath, blood and heartbeat (Vitara the Breath-Giver, The Drummer in the Chest), powers of renewal and dawn, guardians of children and the hearth, and gods of resurrection and second chances such as Anastara the Twice-Risen. Gods and goddesses both appear, beside single names like Aeloris, Latin and Greek forms like Mater Viventium, and one-word kennings like Lifewarden.

A small share are attested deities, marked with a culture in parentheses, such as Khnum (Egyptian) or Eir (Norse). They are listed by name only. Everything without a label is made up for fictional pantheons.

How to choose god of life names

  • Decide the god's job before the name: making people, bringing them into the world, mending them, or giving them back. A cleric of Merovin Bone-Setter plays very differently from a cleric of The God of Not Yet.
  • Pair a life god with the death god of the same pantheon and let the names answer each other. Lord of the Second Dawn reads best beside a rival who owns the last dusk.
  • Use a title for everyday speech and a personal name for the rites. Villagers thank Grandmother Ember at the fireside; the temple liturgy calls on Sennaya of the Warm Hands.
  • Names with a culture label, such as Hygieia (Greek) or Brigid (Irish), are real figures, and some labeled deities are still worshipped today. Keep them for historical or mythological settings and choose an unlabeled name for an invented god.
  • Say the name as a blessing over a cradle or a sickbed. If "Mother Evergrowing keep you" sounds right aloud, the name works.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a god of life?

For a maker of people, try Orvash the Clay-Handed or The Potter at the Wheel of Souls. For a healer, Thalen the Mender or Asclera Plague-Breaker. For a goddess of birth, Benwyra the Cord-Cutter or Sennaya of the Warm Hands, and for a god known only by a title, Lord of the Second Dawn or The Life-Giver.

Which names on the list are real deities?

The ones with a culture in parentheses, such as Khnum, Heqet and Ptah (Egyptian), Ninhursag (Sumerian), Asclepius, Hygieia and Eileithyia (Greek), Salus and Lucina (Roman), Eir (Norse) and Brigid (Irish). They are listed by name only, with no added titles. Every name without a label is made up.

Is a god of life the same as a nature god?

Not on this page. Nature gods look after forests, beasts, harvests and weather. The names here are about people: how they were made, born, kept breathing, healed and given another chance. That is why you will find The Drummer in the Chest and Warden of the Nursery Door here and no gods of oak or storm.

Can I use these for a Life domain cleric in D&D?

Yes. The invented names are meant for homebrew pantheons: pick a healer such as Merovin Bone-Setter for a battlefield medic, or a god of second chances such as Anastara the Twice-Risen for a cleric who brings the fallen back. If your table plays in a published setting, look at that setting's own gods first.
