Generate names that fit the God of War universe: Spartan warriors and Olympian gods from the Greek saga, plus Aesir, Vanir, giants, dwarves and Valkyries from the Norse games. Canon characters mixed with mythological and original names for OCs, fan fiction, D&D campaigns and custom lore.

About god of war names

God of War names come from two mythologies stitched together by one man. The Greek saga took its names straight from Olympus and the Theogony, so Kratos (the personification of strength), Deimos (terror), Orkos (oath), Ceryx (herald) and Aletheia (truth) are all real Greek daimones rather than invented words. Santa Monica Studio kept the same trick for the Norse games: Atreus was named for a Spartan, but Mimir, Baldur, Angrboda, Thrud, Sinmara and the Valkyries Hrist, Mist, Eir and Gondul are lifted from the Eddas, and the dwarves Brok and Sindri are the smiths who forged Mjolnir in the original myth.

That means the richest source for original God of War characters is the mythology the games have not used yet. The Greek list here mixes the Spartan roll call (Brasidas, Dienekes, Gorgo, Kyniska) with titans, giants and minor deities the series skipped (Ophion, Porphyrion, Alke, Nemesis). The Norse list pulls Aesir and Vanir who never appeared, giants like Hrungnir and Thrym, dwarves from the Voluspa, the full roster of Valkyrie names, and saga heroes such as Starkad and Hervor, plus original bynames in the series' style (Vethild Wolfmother).

The spellings follow the games: Greek names in their Latinate or anglicized forms, Norse names with the thorn and eth simplified (Thrud, not Þrúðr) so they read cleanly.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the saga. A Greek-era OC should sound like Deimos or Lysandra; a Norse-era one like Skjoldr or Sigrun. Mixing a Greek name into the Norse realms only works if the character is, like Kratos, a deliberate outsider.
  • Mine the Theogony and the Eddas for concept names. Kratos, Deimos and Orkos are literally Strength, Terror and Oath, so a god of vengeance named Nemesis or a war-spirit named Makhai fits the series' logic.
  • Give Norse characters a byname, not a surname: Baldur the Bright, Faye the Just, Grim Shaggy-Cheek. One descriptive word beats a compound surname every time.
  • Use the full Valkyrie and dwarf rosters for supporting casts; the games named only some of them, so Skogul, Reginleif, Dvalinn and Andvari are canon-compatible and unused.
  • Keep spellings anglicized the way the games do (Thrud, Jormungandr, Hercules) so names read clearly in dialogue and subtitles.

Frequently asked questions

Are these names from the actual God of War games?

Some are. The list includes canon characters from the Greek trilogy and the Norse games (Kratos, Atreus, Freya, Baldur, Brok, Sindri, Thrud, the named Valkyries) alongside mythological figures the series never used and a smaller set of original names written in the same style.

What does the name Kratos mean?

Kratos is the Greek word for strength or power and the name of a minor god who, in Hesiod, serves Zeus alongside his siblings Bia (force), Zelos (zeal) and Nike (victory). Deimos, Kratos's brother in the games, is the god of terror and a son of Ares in myth.

Why is Atreus named after a Greek when he lives in Midgard?

In the games Kratos names his son after Atreus of Sparta, a cheerful soldier he once served with. It is a deliberate Greek name in a Norse world, which is why Norse characters call him Loki instead, the name his mother Faye chose.

Can I use these names for a D&D character or fan fiction?

Yes. Mythological names are public domain and free to use. If you are publishing commercially, avoid the original characters that belong to the franchise, such as Kratos, Atreus and Mimir's specific portrayal.
