Generate god king names for fantasy worlds, tabletop campaigns and fiction: titled rulers like God-King Azurakhet the Undying and Empress Nyssara Sky-Descended, living suns like Xerathis, Living Sun of Karth, regnal names like Solmaran IX, the Radiant, and title-only forms like The Deathless Throne.

About god king names

A god-king is a ruler whose subjects worship them, and the name has to carry that claim. History shows the usual ways to make it. A divine title is attached to the name, as when the Ptolemies of Egypt styled themselves Savior Gods and Benefactor Gods. An epithet claims descent, as when Alexander was hailed son of Zeus-Ammon. Or the ruler is declared a god outright, as Naram-Sin of Akkad was in his own lifetime and Augustus was after death, when he became Divus Augustus.

This list of 1,000 names uses the same moves in fantasy dress. It mixes sun-kings and living suns, sky-descended dynasts, undying and reborn emperors, god-queens and divine empresses, dragon-blooded and star-born lines, tyrants who demand worship, priest-kings of temple cities, storm and river gods on thrones, god-born heirs and far-future god-emperors. Regnal names with numbers, such as Solmaran IX, the Radiant, suggest a long dynasty. Title-only forms, such as The Deathless Throne, suit a ruler too holy to name.

A small share of the entries are real deified rulers of the ancient world, each labeled in parentheses so you can tell history from invention. The rest are invented for your own settings.

How to choose god king names

  • Decide how the ruler claims godhood, then pick the matching style: a title (God-King Aurakhan the Blazing), a descent claim (Tharion God-Born or Altaimur, Shard of the Sky God) or an identity (Xerathis, Living Sun of Karth).
  • Give a long dynasty a regnal number. Ozkharin XXI, Same God, New Crown tells players the throne is older than their own kingdom's records.
  • Use a title-only form when subjects are forbidden to speak the name. Courtiers say The Unseen God-Emperor or The Idol That Breathes, and the personal name becomes a secret worth a quest.
  • Keep the epithet to one strong claim. Vashtar, Whom the Rivers Obey says more than a stack of five titles, and it is easier to say at the table.
  • The entries labeled historical belong to real ancient rulers. Read them as models of how divine titles worked, and drop the label if you borrow the form.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like a god-king's?

A claim of divinity built into the name itself: a divine title (God-King, God-Empress, Living Sun), an epithet no mortal could earn (the Undying, Sky-Descended, God-Born) or a clause that describes divine power, as in Vashtar, Whom the Rivers Obey. A plain royal name with a harsh epithet reads as a tyrant, not a god.

Are there god-queens and divine empresses in the list?

Yes, a large share. Examples include Immortal Queen Ishavel, Empress Nyssara Sky-Descended, God-Empress Quillara, Divine Empress Kallisthene and Nefrusobi, Lion-Seated and Holy. Many of the title-only forms also work for any ruler, such as The Deathless Throne or The Reigning Deity.

Which names are real historical rulers?

Only the entries with a label in parentheses, such as Naram-Sin of Akkad (historical, deified in his lifetime) and Divus Augustus (historical, deified Roman emperor). They are rulers of the ancient world who were worshipped in life or declared gods after death; two of them, Gilgamesh and Lugalbanda of Uruk, are labeled legendary. Every other entry is an invented title in that style, though a few borrow an ancient personal name.

Can I use these for a far-future god-emperor?

Yes. One group is written for science fiction, with names like God-Emperor Valtraxis of Ninety Suns, The Sleeper God in Cryovault One and Archive God-King Librarius Ohm. The older-sounding names also work for a star empire that has lasted long enough to forget its own beginnings.
