GitHub Name Generator

A GitHub username is the most public handle most developers will ever own. It sits in every repository URL, every commit, every issue comment and the profile link on your resume, so it has to be typeable, readable in a monospace font and still sensible ten years from now. GitHub allows only letters, digits and single hyphens (no underscores, no leading or trailing hyphen, 39 characters max) and treats case as cosmetic, which is why the strongest handles are lowercase compounds of two short words: quietfork, hexlantern, cachecairn, patchlark.

The names here fall into a few registers. Compound handles pair a programming noun with something physical or natural (socketsage, brackenbyte, lanternworks) and read as a person rather than a bot. Dev in-jokes (rebasebandit, letitcrash, works-on-my-machine) are memorable but date faster. Name-plus-verb handles such as ingridcodes or tomasforks are a good choice when your own name is taken. 0x-prefixed tags suit security and systems people, and the lab, studio and systems names at the end of the list work for organization accounts that will own many repos.

Whatever you pick, search it on GitHub, npm, PyPI and crates.io first. A handle that is also free as a package scope and a domain is worth far more than a slightly cleverer one that is not.
