Gambler Name Generator

Gambler names follow a convention older than Las Vegas: a plain given name, a nickname in quotation marks, and a surname, as in Silas "Two-Pair" Harlow or Delphine "The Countess" Marchetti. The nickname is the working part. Historically it came from a hometown (Amarillo Slim, Cincinnati Kid), a physical trait (Fats, Slim, One-Eyed Jack), a signature play (Check-Raise, Stand Pat) or the game itself (Faro Nell, Baccarat Bobby). Riverboat and frontier gamblers dressed their names up with borrowed titles, which is why so many were called Doc, Judge, Colonel, Deacon or Professor without holding any such office.

The vocabulary of the table does a lot of the work. Poker gives you bluff, tell, gutshot, kicker and the river; craps gives hard eight, boxcars, snake eyes and seven-out; blackjack gives double down, soft seventeen and insurance; the pit gives marker, comp, vig and whale. A nickname drawn from one game tells the reader what this character plays and whether they win.

Standalone aliases such as The Professor, The Undertaker or The Grey Wolf of Reno suit gamblers who would rather not be known by a real name at all: card counters, cheats and backroom legends. Pick the style that matches your era, and keep the nickname to one or two words so it can be growled across a table.
