About speakeasy names

During US Prohibition (1920 to 1933) tens of thousands of illegal drinking spots opened behind unmarked doors, and their names had a job to do: sound innocent from the street and knowing on the inside. Many did not advertise a name at all, so regulars called them by their cover business (the barbershop, the pharmacy, the laundry) or by a password or a proprietor's first name. Others took on animal codes: a blind pig or blind tiger was a place that charged admission to see an animal and threw in a free drink, a legal fig leaf that became slang for the bar itself.

The famous survivors give the tone. New York had the 21 Club, Chumley's and Texas Guinan's 300 Club, where she greeted patrons with Hello, sucker. Harlem had the Cotton Club. Bathtub gin, hooch, giggle water and coffin varnish were slang for the liquor, and Prohibition-era cocktails like the Bee's Knees, the Southside and the French 75 were invented partly to hide the taste of rough spirits.

Modern speakeasy-style bars borrow those conventions. Good names are short, a little secretive, and hint at a hidden entrance or a false front: The Green Door, The Back Room, Please Don't Tell, Room 13.
