Generate invented arthouse film titles for screenwriting exercises, parody posters, film-club quizzes and fiction: poetic sentences like The Salt of Mondays, bare one-worders like Sediment, numbered parts like Chapter Four: The Orchard, and 'translated' titles like To Be Sad on a Bicycle.

About arthouse film names

An arthouse title rarely tells you the plot. Where a mainstream title sells a hook, a festival-circuit title sets a mood, names one small thing, or simply states a place and a date. That makes the form easy to recognize and fun to imitate: a long poetic sentence such as The Last Ferry Carries Only Fog, a single bare word such as Sediment or Ajar, or a numbered part such as Chapter Four: The Orchard.

The 1,000 titles here are all invented. They were written in fourteen styles and then shuffled, so each batch mixes them. There are titles that sound translated and keep a slightly odd grammar (To Be Sad on a Bicycle), seasons and hours (Fog Until Further Notice), animals and objects doing very little (The Ox Is Resting), a place and a year (Trieste, 1974), essay-film and diary titles (Diary of a Borrowed Camera), portraits, questions, colors and sounds, and a small share of Untitled and bracketed titles borrowed from gallery art. A few are in French, Spanish, Italian, German or Portuguese.

One style is openly affectionate parody: A Meditation in Beige, or Three Hours, No Dialogue, One Goat. Use those for a spoof poster or a quiz round, and the quieter ones for a screenwriting exercise or a film inside your novel.

How to choose arthouse film names

  • Decide the register before you pick. A sincere short film wants a quiet title like Slowly, the Milk or Noon Without Shadows; a spoof wants one that winks, like The Void Wears a Cardigan.
  • Let the title name something small that is actually in the film: an object, an hour, a room. Arthouse titles work by understatement, so if your script has a ferry in one scene, The Last Ferry Carries Only Fog can carry the whole film.
  • For a 'real or fake' quiz round, mix a handful of these with genuine festival titles and ask players to spot the invented ones. The place-and-year and numbered-chapter styles are the hardest to tell apart.
  • Read the title aloud with 'a film by' in front of it. If it still sounds serious, keep it for the drama; if you smile, save it for the parody poster.
  • Before you release a film under a title, search film databases and festival catalogs yourself. These titles are invented, but a real film may already use the same words.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a film title sound arthouse?

Understatement. The title names a mood, a small object, a time of day or a place rather than the plot, and it is often either very long or a single word. Compare A Train Passes and Nothing Changes or Lintel with a typical thriller title and the difference is clear.

Are these real film titles?

No. All 1,000 are invented for this list, written in the style of festival and slow-cinema titles. So many films are made worldwide that an invented title can still match a real one by chance, so search for it before you use it on a release.

Can I use these titles for a parody poster or a quiz?

Yes, many of them are written for exactly that. The gently pretentious ones, such as Seventeen Hours of Looking at a Wall, The Semiotics of Toast and Subtitled Even in the Original, are affectionate jokes about the genre. They suit spoof posters, film-club quiz rounds and fake festival programs.

Why do some titles have odd grammar?

Those imitate titles in translation, where a literal rendering keeps the word order of the original language. My Brother, He Is the Fog and The Uncle Returns Not are examples. They were written in English from the start and are not translations of real titles.
