About female shaman names

Every name on this list is a woman's name, unlike the general shaman page, where men, women and genderless titles are mixed. Three things shape the names, and two of them carry the gender. The first is the ending of the given name: orc women here end in a hard consonant plus -a (Durza, Korga, Rukha), troll women take an apostrophe and a vowel ending (Zal'mira, Jin'sali), tauren names are soft, often with a doubled consonant (Hessa, Dunna) and draenei names stretch their vowels (Aluuni, Thelaani).

The second is name order. The given name comes first and the clan or spirit byname follows, as a compound (Hessa Cloudhoof, Torga Stormfeather), an earned epithet (Aldra Salt-Eyed, Fenna Twice-Drowned) or a place of belonging (Zolga of the Burnt Tusk, Karsa of the Grey Heron). The third is the title, which goes before the name and gives rank and role at once: Farseer Tamsa, Spirit Mother Oksa, Bone Singer Narka, Grandmother Tove. Descriptive names such as The Heron Wife or Daughter of the Ninth Drum suit a seer whose given name nobody uses any more.

A small, marked group uses real words for women practitioners: völva, seiðkona and spákona from Old Norse, udgan from Mongolian and mudang from Korean, each paired only with given names from that language. Everything else is fantasy.

How to choose female shaman names

  • Pick the people first. An orc farseer, a tauren spirit walker and a draenei shaman sound nothing alike, and the ending of the given name is what signals it.
  • Save titles for rank. A young shaman is plain Hessa Cloudhoof; she becomes Spirit Mother Hessa or Grandmother Hessa when the tribe starts coming to her for answers.
  • Let the epithet record an event. Fenna Twice-Drowned and Quenna Wind-Widowed each hold a backstory in two words, which helps more at the table than a general nature word.
  • For a game with a one-word name field, use a single name such as Groza, Zal'uja, Luunara or Xeraani and keep the byname for your role-play profile.
  • Use the real titles (völva, udgan, mudang) only for characters from those cultures, and read about the tradition before you write one.
