Generate fantasy street names for any medieval or magical city: guild rows like Coppersmiths' Row, grim alleys like Gallows Row and Cutpurse Alley, noble avenues, harbour wharves, wizard quarters and evocative named streets such as the Street of Silent Bells. Ideal for D&D city maps, novels and worldbuilding.
About fantasy street names
Real medieval streets were named for what happened on them, and that is the secret to a fantasy street that feels lived in. Trades clustered together, so a city had a Tanners' Reach downwind of everything, a Coppersmiths' Row ringing with hammers, and a Shambles where butchers threw offal into the gutter. Landmarks gave names to the rest: Bell Tower Yard, Market Cross, Old Quay Steps, Gallows Row. Fantasy cities add their own trades and landmarks, which is where Alchemists' Row, Wandmakers' Close, Dragonsgate Way and Wyrmtooth Lane come from.
The suffix does a lot of work. Lane, Row and Alley suggest narrow, old and crowded; Street and Way are the main thoroughfares; Walk, Close, Mews and Court are quieter corners; Steps, Stair, Cut and Wynd hint at a hilly or cramped city; Avenue, Promenade and Boulevard belong to the rich new quarter; Wharf, Quay and Strand mark the waterfront. Longer descriptive names (Street of Silent Bells, Lane of a Thousand Steps, Court of Small Miracles) sound older and grander and usually carry a story the locals can tell.
The list mixes all of these so you can fill in a whole map: a guild district, a harbour, a temple quarter, a wizards' row, a noble hill and the rookeries where the thieves' guild meets.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name streets by district. Give the poor quarter names like Rat Run, Fleapit Lane and Beggars' Reach, the guild quarter trade names ending in Row or Yard, and the noble quarter wide Avenues and Promenades.
- Mix short and long. Most streets in a city should be two words (Herring Lane, Ivory Crescent); save the Street of Forgotten Gods style for three or four important roads so they stand out on the map.
- Let a name carry history. Gallows Row, Old Siege Road and Lane of the Hanged Bard each imply an event your players or readers can ask about, which is free worldbuilding.
- Use local creatures and materials. A dwarven city wants Anvil Street, Ore Street and Deepdelve Way; a coastal city wants Kraken Wharf, Brinegate and Netmenders' Row; a wizard city wants Hexwright Lane and Scryers' Steps.
- Keep the apostrophes consistent. Tanners' Reach (plural possessive) is the historical form for a trade street; Ferryman's Reach (singular) implies one famous person or building.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a fantasy street name sound medieval?
Naming after trades (Fletchers' Alley, Dyers' Reach), landmarks (Bell Tower Yard, Old Quay Steps) and events (Gallows Row, Plague Pit Row), plus older suffixes like Row, Wynd, Close, Mews and Steps instead of Drive or Boulevard. Real medieval cities like York and Edinburgh still have the Shambles, Wynds and Closes that inspired many of these.
How many streets does a fantasy city need?
For a game or novel you rarely need to name more than 15 to 30: the main gate road, the market, one or two streets per district and a handful of alleys where scenes happen. Name the rest only when a character walks down them. Generate a list per district so the names in each quarter share a flavour.
Can I use these for D&D or Pathfinder city maps?
Yes, that is exactly what they are for. Pair them with the fantasy city and fantasy tavern generators to build a full map: drop a Cutpurse Alley next to the thieves' guild, an Alchemists' Row beside the wizard tower and a Kraken Wharf on the docks.
What is the difference between a Row, a Reach and a Wynd?
A Row is a short street lined with one kind of building, often a single trade. A Reach is a longer straight stretch, originally of river but used here for roads too. A Wynd (Scots) or Vennel is a narrow lane between tall houses, perfect for a cramped old town or a chase scene.
