Generate realistic European names from more than thirty countries: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Nordic, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Balkan, Greek, Baltic, Irish, Scottish and more. Every entry is a natural first-and-surname pairing you could meet on a train from Lisbon to Tallinn.

About european names

Europe has about forty naming traditions, and a name only sounds European when its two halves come from the same one. Léa Fontaine, Jonas Weber, Giulia Moretti, Zuzanna Wiśniewska and Aoife Murphy are all unmistakably European, but swap the surnames around and every one of them breaks. This generator keeps each pairing inside one country, so a Finnish first name sits with a Finnish surname and a Catalan one with a Catalan one.

The surnames carry the geography. Patronymic endings mark the north and east: -sson and -sen in Scandinavia, -dóttir in Iceland, -ski and -ska in Poland, -ović and -ić in the Balkans, -enko in Ukraine, -escu in Romania, -opoulos in Greece. The west leans on trades and places: French Lefebvre and Marchand, German Schreiber and Zimmermann, English Thornton and Ashworth, Dutch and Flemish de Vries and Van Damme. Italian and Iberian surnames usually end in a vowel (Ricci, Navarro, Ferreira), and Irish and Scottish ones keep the Ó, Mac and Mc prefixes meaning descendant of.

Given names follow national fashion: Hugo, Emma and Sofia are top-ten across much of the continent right now, while Tadhg, Ffion, Ainhoa, Zsombor and Hrafnhildur belong firmly to one place. The list below is grouped loosely by region, so you can pick a single country or pull from the whole map.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Keep both halves from the same country. A Polish first name with an Italian surname reads as a mistake unless the character is meant to have mixed heritage.
  • Use the surname ending to set the region fast: -sson or -sen for Scandinavia, -ski for Poland, -ić for the Balkans, -escu for Romania, -opoulos for Greece, -ez for Spain.
  • Remember gendered surnames in Slavic and Baltic languages: a Czech or Slovak woman is Nováková, not Novák; a Polish woman is Kowalska, not Kowalski; an unmarried Lithuanian woman takes -aitė or -ytė.
  • Keep the diacritics. Łukasz, Ștefan, Søren and Þórsson are pronounced differently without them, and dropping them flattens the name into something generic.
  • Match the generation: Léo, Noah and Mia for children born after 2015; Monique, Gerhard and Bogdan for grandparents. A 1950s Spaniard is more likely to be José Luis than Iker.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries are covered by this European name generator?

Names come from France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain (including Basque and Catalan), Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Malta, Ukraine, European Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. Each name is a pairing that would be normal inside that country.

How do I tell where a European name comes from?

Look at the surname ending first. -sson, -sen and -dóttir are Nordic; -ski, -ska and -czyk are Polish; -ová is Czech or Slovak; -ić and -ović are South Slavic; -escu is Romanian; -ov and -ova are Bulgarian or Russian; -enko is Ukrainian; -opoulos, -idis and -akis are Greek; -ez is Spanish; -es is Portuguese; and prefixes like van, de, Ó, Mac and Mc point to the Netherlands, France, Ireland and Scotland.

Are these real people's names?

They are realistic combinations of common given names and surnames from each country, not references to specific living people. Because the pool is ordinary names, a real person somewhere may share one, exactly as happens with any common name. That makes them good for characters, test data and placeholder profiles, but check before using one for a public brand or persona.

Can I use these names for characters in historical fiction?

Yes, but check the era. Surnames are stable across centuries, but first-name fashion shifts quickly: a German born in 1900 is more likely to be Wilhelm or Gertrud than Finn or Lena, and Irish Gaelic spellings such as Saoirse became popular only in the late twentieth century. Use the surnames freely and pair them with period-appropriate given names from the linked country pages.
