About Scandinavian last names

For most of their history Scandinavians had no family name. A man was Anders, son of Nils, and his children were named after him, so the second name changed every generation. Denmark ordered fixed family names in 1828, Sweden in 1901 and Norway in 1923, and the patronymic then in use froze. That is why Andersson, Johansson and Karlsson lead in Sweden, and Jensen, Nielsen and Hansen in Denmark. Sweden writes -sson, its neighbors write -sen.

About six names in ten here are Swedish, because Sweden built the largest stock. Townspeople joined two nature words, giving Lindberg (linden and mountain), Bergström (mountain and stream), Sjögren (lake and branch) and Holmqvist (islet and twig). The army handed recruits short soldier names such as Rask, Modig, Sköld and Tapper to tell one Andersson from the next. Clergy took Latin and Greek forms like Celsius and Melander, and noble houses carry names read off their coats of arms, such as Oxenstierna and Leijonhufvud.

Norwegians mostly took the name of the farm they lived on: Haugen is the hill, Bakke the slope, Dahl the valley, Nygård the new farm. Danes did the same with -gaard names like Nørgaard and Østergaard. Iceland is left out: most Icelanders still use a true patronymic that is not handed down, so it is no family name at all.

How to choose Scandinavian last names

  • Read the country from the spelling. A double s with ä or ö points to Sweden, -sen with ø or æ to Denmark or Norway, -gaard to Denmark, and farm endings such as -rud, -stad, -heim, -vik and -bø to Norway.
  • For a story set before the middle of the nineteenth century, build a real patronymic from the father's given name instead of taking a fixed surname. A daughter used -dotter in Sweden and -datter in Denmark and Norway.
  • Soldier names such as Stål, Svärd and Hård suit military families, and a nature name such as Hammarström or Liljeblad suits a merchant or civil servant family from a Swedish town.
  • The noble names belong to real houses, many of them with living members. Use them to learn the style, then coin a fictional one of your own for a count or a baroness.
  • Keep å, ä, ö, æ and ø where you can. If your system cannot show them, the usual fallbacks are aa, ae and oe, so Sjögren becomes Sjoegren and Nørgaard becomes Noergaard.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Scandinavian last names?

In Sweden the top of the list is Andersson, Johansson, Karlsson, Nilsson and Eriksson. In Denmark it is Nielsen, Jensen, Hansen, Pedersen and Andersen, and in Norway Hansen, Johansen, Olsen and Larsen. Every one of them is a frozen patronymic, and all of them are in this list.

What is the difference between -sson and -sen?

Both mean "son of". Swedish keeps the s of the possessive and the s of son, so Anders gives Andersson, while Danish and Norwegian use the shorter -sen, so the same father gives Andersen. If you see Olsson you are almost certainly looking at a Swedish family, and Olsen is Danish or Norwegian.

Why do so many Swedish surnames sound like nature words?

When families in towns wanted something more distinctive than a patronymic, they joined two pleasant words from the landscape, often with no link to a real place. Lind (linden), berg (mountain), ström (stream), lund (grove), gren (branch) and qvist (twig) were favorites. Names in this list such as Lindgren, Lundqvist, Blomqvist and Ekström were made that way.

Are Icelandic and Finnish surnames included?

No. The list covers Sweden, Norway and Denmark, which is what Scandinavia means in the strict sense. Most Icelanders carry a patronymic such as Jónsson or Jónsdóttir that changes each generation, and Finnish surnames come from a different language family, so both have pages of their own on this site.
