About Esperanto names

Esperanto treats a name like any other noun: it ends in -o. When L. L. Zamenhof published the language in 1887, signing himself Doktoro Esperanto, the common European names took Esperanto shapes, and those forms have been in dictionaries and books ever since: Johano, Petro, Paŭlo, Ludoviko, Vilhelmo, Georgo. In the oldest texts women's names end in -o as well (Mario, Klaro, Sofio, Elizabeto), but most speakers today use -a, so Maria, Klara and Sofia stand in the list beside the older forms.

Two features are Esperanto's own. The suffixes -ĉj- and -nj- make affectionate short forms from the first letters of a name: Johano becomes Joĉjo, Petro becomes Peĉjo, Maria becomes Manjo. And the Esperanto Bible, whose Old Testament Zamenhof translated himself, spells Hebrew names with the language's own letters: Jeĥezkel, Ŝimŝon, Ĥabakuk, Raĥel.

The 500 entries also hold classical names in their Esperanto forms, names from Zamenhof's translation of Hamlet such as Ofelio and Laerto, and Esperanto words of the kind speakers choose as nicknames and pen names, each with its meaning, as in Espero (hope). Every name is written with the proper letters ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ŝ and ŭ. Family names are left out, because Esperanto speakers keep their surnames as they are.

How to choose Esperanto names

  • Use -o for a man. For a woman, choose -a for a present-day feel or -o for the style of the earliest Esperanto books, and keep to one style within a story.
  • A pet form takes -ĉjo for a man and -njo for a woman after the first one to five letters of the name, so Vilhelmo can be Vilĉjo, Viĉjo or Vilhelĉjo. All three are in the list.
  • Type the real letters. Ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ŝ and ŭ are letters of their own with their own sounds, and spellings such as "cx" or "ch" are only stopgaps for a keyboard that lacks them.
  • The stress always falls on the second-last syllable: lu-do-VI-ko, ma-RI-a, jo-HA-no. Say a name aloud that way before you settle on it.
  • Leave the surname alone. An Esperanto speaker pairs an Esperanto given name with the family name as it is written at home.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Esperanto names?

The given names are Esperanto forms of the kind found in Esperanto dictionaries, the Esperanto Bible and Esperanto literature, such as Johano, Katarina, Miĥaelo and Zeĥarja. The list has not been compared entry by entry with a dictionary, so look a form up before you print it. The word names, such as Stelo (star) and Paco (peace), are ordinary Esperanto words offered as ideas for nicknames and pen names, not registered given names.

How do I turn my own name into Esperanto?

If your name belongs to the common European stock, it probably has an established form already: John, Juan and Jan are all Johano, and Catherine is Katarina. If it does not, do what most speakers do and keep your name as it is. Nobody is expected to change a name to speak Esperanto.

Why does the list have both Mario and Maria?

They are the same name in two styles. Early Esperanto gave every name the noun ending -o, so the first textbooks have Mario, Klaro and Sofio for women. Most speakers now prefer -a for women's names, which gives Maria, Klara and Sofia.

What are names like Joĉjo and Manjo?

They are affectionate short forms, the Esperanto answer to Johnny and Molly. The suffix -ĉj- is for men and -nj- for women, and each goes after the first few letters of the name: Joĉjo from Johano, Miĉjo from Miĥaelo, Manjo from Maria, Sonjo from Sofia.
