About first names

A first name carries more information than people expect: it hints at roughly when someone was born, where their family comes from, and even the tone of the story they belong in. Olivia, Liam and Noah read as children born in the 2010s; Harold, Mavis and Clarence suggest someone born before the war; Atlas, Wren and Indigo feel like a parent who reads design blogs. This generator draws on all of those layers, so it serves novelists, expecting parents, Sims players and anyone quietly testing names for a real-life change.

The pool mixes current US and UK top-100 names, mid-century and Edwardian revivals, short nickname-style names like Gus, Nell and Kit, and given names that are common in Spanish, Italian, French, German, Scandinavian, Slavic, Arabic, Hebrew, Indian, East Asian, West African, Greek and Welsh families. Every entry is a real name in actual use, spelled the standard way, with no invented respellings.

If you are matching a first name to an existing surname, say the pair out loud. Two-syllable first names tend to sit well before one-syllable surnames (Eleanor Price), short first names balance long surnames (Max Castellanos), and repeated endings such as Emily Kelly can feel sing-song. Stress pattern, initials and how the name shortens in daily speech matter more than any meaning in a baby book.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Test the full name in three contexts: shouted across a room, signed at the bottom of an email, and shortened by a friend. A name that survives all three is a keeper.
  • Match the name to the birth year. For a character born in 1955 pick from Linda, Gary, Carol or Dennis; for one born in 2015 pick Harper, Mason, Ava or Ezra.
  • For a name change, keep the same initial or sound as your old name if you want family and colleagues to adjust easily; switch initials entirely if you want a clean break.
  • Check how the first name interacts with the surname's first letter and stress: avoid awkward run-ons like Rose Samuels (rose-amuels) and initials that spell something unfortunate.
  • When writing an ensemble cast, give each character a different first letter and syllable count so readers never confuse Lena with Lana or Jon with John.

Frequently asked questions

Can I generate a first name to go with my last name?

Yes. Write down your surname, then run the generator and read each result aloud in front of it. Favour a contrasting syllable count (short first name with a long surname or vice versa) and avoid matching end-sounds, such as Kelly Reilly, unless you like the rhyme.

Are these names suitable for a legal name change?

Every name in the pool is a real, conventionally spelled given name, so any of them would be accepted on official paperwork. Before committing, live with a shortlist for a few weeks, introduce yourself with it, and check how it looks with your middle and last names.

Does the generator include names from other languages?

Yes. Roughly a third of the list is first names that are common in Spanish, Italian, French, German, Nordic, Polish, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Yoruba, Swahili, Greek and Welsh families, alongside English-language classics and modern favourites.

How do I pick a first name for a fictional character?

Decide the character's birth year, family background and the feeling you want the reader to have, then filter the results through those three lenses. A villain named Teddy and a hero named Thaddeus each tell the reader something before the character speaks.
