Generate elven mountain names for fantasy maps, campaigns and novels: Elvish-style peaks like Celenthir, Amon Lhaer and Ered Silivren, plain-speech kennings like Silverhorn and Cloudmantle, and watch-hills, holy summits and haunted heights such as The Weeping Tor.

About elven mountain names

Elves in fantasy rarely name a mountain only once. The pattern goes back to Tolkien, whose three peaks above Moria are Caradhras, Celebdil and Fanuidhol in Sindarin and Redhorn, Silvertine and Cloudyhead in the Common Speech. Most settings since keep both layers: a flowing name in the elves' own tongue, and a plain-speech kenning that travelers, traders and mapmakers use.

This list of 1,000 names has both, as separate entries. The Elvish-style names include single peaks such as Celenthir and Varethil, forms like Mount Aelindor, and two-word names built on a mountain element. A minority borrow Tolkien's Sindarin elements (amon for a hill, emyn for hills, orod for a mountain, ered for mountains); the rest use coined elements such as Thol, Sael and Hael. They are invented to sound Elvish and are not real Sindarin or Quenya, so no translations are given.

The plain-speech half covers snow, silver and mist kennings (Silverhorn, Cloudmantle), whole ranges, watch-hills and beacon heights, holy summits where elves read the stars, peaks named for heroes and lost realms, and sorrowful heights left by old wars. Wood elf, high elf and dark elf flavors are all here, along with coastal heads for sea elves, a few Welsh, Irish and Old Norse styled names, and a small share of passes and stairs.

How to choose elven mountain names

  • Give each mountain two names: the Elvish one its people use (Amon Lhaer) and the kenning outsiders use (Silverhorn). Put both on the map; which one a character says tells the reader where they come from.
  • Match the element to the scale. In Tolkien's Sindarin, amon is a single hill and ered is a range, so keep Amon-style names for watch-hills and lone heights and use Ered-style names or a title like The Aelvaren Mountains for a whole chain.
  • Let the culture choose the flavor. Wood elves name heights for trees and beasts (Stagcrown Fell), high elves for sun, gold and crystal (The Gilded Summit), dark elves for night and glass (The Obsidian Tooth).
  • Use the sorrowful names sparingly. One Weeping Tor or Hill of Broken Harps on a map implies an old war; five of them make the history feel cheap.
  • Say the name aloud beside your elf character names and the nearby forest and city names. A mountain should share sounds with the people who named it.

Frequently asked questions

What do elves call mountains?

In most fantasy settings elves give a mountain a name in their own language and a plain-speech name for outsiders. Tolkien's Caradhras is Redhorn in the Common Speech. In this list, Elvish-style entries such as Celenthir and Ered Silivren sit beside kennings such as Silverhorn and Cloudmantle, so you can pick one of each for the same peak.

Are these real Sindarin or Quenya names?

Only a small share. Sixteen entries are Tolkien's own peaks, hills and ranges: Caradhras, Celebdil, Fanuidhol, Ered Luin, Mindolluin, Taniquetil, Amon Sûl, Amon Hen, Amon Rûdh, Ered Nimrais, Ered Wethrin, Emyn Muil, Orodruin, Himring, Crissaegrim and Oiolossë. The other Elvish-style names are invented to sound Elvish, some of them on his elements amon, ered, emyn, orod and cirith, and they carry no real translation.

How do I name a whole elven mountain range?

Name the range first, then two or three peaks inside it. Range entries here include The Aelvaren Mountains, Ered Silivren and The Seven Sleepers. Pair one with a single peak such as Mount Aelindor and a watch-hill like Warden's Height, and the map starts to feel lived in.

Can I use these names in a D&D campaign or a novel?

Yes for a home campaign or your own drafts. Tolkien's canon names come from his books, so keep those for the table and swap them out in anything you publish. For the invented names, search for the one you like before you publish with it, since other books and games may already use something similar.
