Generate earth god and goddess names for pantheons, novels and tabletop campaigns: real deities such as Geb, Gaia and Pachamama, invented gods like Terrakor and Orumbar the Deep Father, and title names like The Bedrock King and Lady of the Loam.

About earth god names

Earth deities fall into a few families. The best known is the earth mother: Greek Gaia, Roman Tellus, Norse Jord, Vedic Prithvi and Maori Papatuanuku, several of them paired with a sky father. Egypt turns the pair around, with the god Geb as the earth under the sky goddess Nut. Others shake or tower: Ruaumoko, the Maori god of earthquakes, Poseidon under his Homeric title Enosichthon, the earth-shaker, and mountain gods such as Japanese Oyamatsumi and Korean Sansin. Shapers of clay like Khnum and Nuwa, and rulers of the ground below like Hades and Ereshkigal, complete the set.

About one name in eight, 128 of the 1,000, is a real one, some with a traditional title attached, such as Tellus Mater or Ge Kourotrophos. A few are not strictly earth gods: Atlas is a Titan and Ullikummi a giant of stone, but both belong with divine rock.

The rest are original and keep to stone, soil, mountain, cave, clay and earthquake: single names (Terrakor, Golvand, Ummara), epithet names such as Orumbar the Deep Father, place gods like Vorrum of the Nine Strata, bare titles like The Bedrock King, bynames like Loamwife, pantheon entries such as Dorrath, Patron of Masons, and names coined from words for earth and stone in Old Norse, Latin, Greek, Welsh and Slavic languages.

How to choose earth god names

  • Decide what kind of earth the god rules before you pick. A god of foundations suits The Bedrock King, an earthquake god suits Korrasht the Wall-Toppler, a potter god suits Argillan the Potter, a mountain god suits Arduval the Unclimbed and a deity of resting fields suits Lady Tilth.
  • Give one deity several names, as real traditions do. The Norse Jord is also called Fjorgyn and Hlodyn, and the Igbo Ala is Ani in other dialects, so your pantheon can say Ummara the Broad-Lapped in the temple and The Wide Lap in the fields.
  • Remember that some of these deities are honored today. Prithvi and Bhumi belong to living Hinduism, Pachamama to the Andes, Papatuanuku to Maori tradition, Asase Ya to the Akan and Ala to the Igbo. If the story needs a villain or a joke, an invented name such as Krolm, Devourer of Roads is the kinder choice.
  • Let the sound carry the ground. Heavy clusters and dark vowels (Golvand, Baskord, Dolmagh) read as bedrock, while m, l and n with open vowels (Ummara, Dolwenna, Luthamma) feel closer to soft, giving soil.
  • Earth gods are slow, so epithets of weight and patience fit them best: Kordath the Unmoved, Halvek the Slow, Golmar the Patient. Keep the sudden words for the earthquake side of the pantheon, as in Jolgrun the Sudden.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the real gods and goddesses of the earth?

Well-known earth deities include Gaia in Greece, Tellus in Rome, Geb in Egypt, Jord among the Norse, Prithvi and Bhumi in Hinduism, Pachamama in the Andes, Papatuanuku for Maori, Tlaltecuhtli among the Aztecs, Houtu in China, Ki in Sumer, Asase Ya among the Akan, Ala among the Igbo and Zemyna in Lithuania. Earthquake and mountain gods such as Ruaumoko, Tepeyollotl and Oyamatsumi are close relatives, and they are in the list too.

Are all of these names from mythology?

No, 128 of the 1,000 are. The rest are original names such as Terrakor, Brannok the Granite-Browed and Vorrum of the Nine Strata, not taken from any tradition. An invented name can still coincide with one used somewhere else, so search it before you publish.

Is the earth always a goddess?

No. Many traditions picture the earth as a mother, as with Gaia, Prithvi and Papatuanuku, but the Egyptian earth is the god Geb, and the Chinese local earth god Tudigong is male as well. Gods of mountains and earthquakes are often male too, such as Oyamatsumi and Ruaumoko. The list keeps both, from Stonemother Hald to Orumbar the Deep Father.

What is a good earth god name for D&D or a fantasy novel?

Pick by domain. For a god of mountains try Kharagund the Snow-Shouldered or The Cloud-Piercer, for caves and deep places Caldrun of the Flowstone Halls or The Deepest Listener, for earthquakes Vharok Faultwalker or The Trembling King, and for a grim god of graves Morghald the Grave-Deep. Entries such as Halgrun, God of Foundations are written to drop straight into a pantheon list.
