Undine Name Generator

The undine was named by the 16th-century alchemist Paracelsus, who sorted the elemental beings into gnomes (earth), sylphs (air), salamanders (fire) and undines (water), from Latin unda, "wave". His undines were human-looking spirits without souls who could gain one by marrying a mortal, a premise Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué turned into the 1811 novella Undine (with the knight Huldbrand and the cold water-uncle Kühleborn), reworked by Giraudoux, Dvořák's Rusalka and Andersen's Little Mermaid. The word later broadened to cover almost any female fresh-water spirit: Germanic nixies and the Lorelei, Wagner's Rhinemaidens Woglinde, Wellgunde and Flosshilde, Slavic rusalki, Celtic lake ladies like Nimue, and the classical naiads and nereids.

A convincing undine name leans on liquid consonants and open vowels: l, r, n, m, s and long a/e/i sounds, as in Ondine, Melusine, Nerissa, Liriel or Vellamo. Harsh stops and clusters feel wrong for a creature of pools and mist. Germanic, French, Slavic and Greek forms each give a different flavour, and an epithet naming her particular water (of the Mill Pool, Stillmere, Coldbrook) roots a spirit in a place the way folklore always did.

The list mixes attested names from myth and literature with original ones built on the same sounds, plus a handful of male water spirits and river gods for settings where undines are not all women.
