Generate Dragon Ball names that follow Akira Toriyama's real pun conventions: vegetable Saiyans, cold-themed Frieza clan, dairy Ginyu Force, slug-and-snail Namekians, underwear Briefs and liquor-named gods. Built for OCs, fan fiction and roleplay.

About dragon ball names

Almost every name in Dragon Ball is a pun, and each faction has its own theme. Saiyans are vegetables: Kakarot (carrot), Vegeta (vegetable), Raditz (radish), Nappa (Chinese cabbage), Broly (broccoli), Cabba (cabbage), Caulifla and Kale. Frieza's family is cold: Frieza (freezer), Cooler, King Cold, Frost, Chilled. The Ginyu Force is dairy: Ginyu (gyunyu, milk), Jeice (cheese), Burter (butter), Recoome (cream), Guldo (yogurt). Namekians are slugs and snails or musical instruments, the Briefs family is underwear (Bulma, Trunks, Bra), the Gods of Destruction and Angels are alcoholic drinks (Beerus, Whis, Champa, Vados), and Majin names come from the magic phrase Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.

The list above mixes canonical characters with original names that follow the same rules, so a new Saiyan warrior might be Rutabaga, Kohlrabi or Cressa, a Frieza Force officer might be Glacia or Frigor, and a Namekian elder might be Escargo or Konch. Toriyama usually disguises the source word by clipping a syllable, swapping a letter or reversing sounds, which is why Kakarot reads as alien rather than as a grocery list.

When inventing your own, pick the faction first, then a food or object from its theme, then bend the spelling until it sounds like it belongs next to Nappa and Zarbon.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the character's race or faction before naming: vegetables for Saiyans, cold words for Frieza's clan, dairy for elite squads, slugs or instruments for Namekians.
  • Distort the pun so it is recognisable but not obvious. Cut a syllable, double a consonant or swap the ending: Turnip becomes Turnipp, Asparagus becomes Aspara.
  • Keep names short. Most canon names are two or three syllables, which is why they land well in shouted attack scenes.
  • For a fusion character, splice the two source names the way Vegito and Gogeta do, taking the front half of one and the back half of the other.
  • Say the name out loud in Japanese-style syllables. If it still sounds like the original word with no disguise, distort it a little further.

Frequently asked questions

How do Dragon Ball names actually work?

Akira Toriyama built almost every name on a pun tied to the character's group: Saiyans are vegetables, Frieza's family is cold-themed, the Ginyu Force is dairy, Namekians are slugs or instruments, and gods are named after alcohol. The list here follows those same rules.

Are these names canon or made up?

Both. Well-known canon characters are included alongside original pun names that use the same theme, so you can borrow a canon-adjacent feel for an OC without copying an existing character.

Can I use these names for a Dragon Ball OC or fan fiction?

Yes. Original names such as Rutabaga, Glacia or Escargo are free to use in fan works, roleplay or games; canon character names belong to their franchise and should be used only for fan projects.

What is a good Saiyan name that isn't already taken?

Start with a less common vegetable and bend it: Kohlrabi, Radicchio, Endiv, Salsifa or Chayotto all fit next to Cabba and Kale without duplicating a canon character.
