About Thayan names
Thay is the magocracy of the Red Wizards in the east of Faerun in the Forgotten Realms. Its ruling class is Mulan, one of the human ethnicities of the Player's Handbook, and the handbook's sample names set the sound: Aoth, Bareris, Ehput-Ki, Kethoth and So-Kehur for men, Arizima, Chathi, Nephis and Umara for women, and family names such as Ankhalab, Hahpet, Sepret and Uuthrakt. The novels add a blunter style for the great names of Thay, among them Szass Tam, Samas Kul and Dmitra Flass.
Titles matter here. Eight zulkirs rule the Red Wizards, one for each school of magic, and a tharchion governs each of the eleven tharchs, the provinces of Thay. Autharchs serve under the tharchions, khazarks run the Thayan enclaves abroad, and Thayan knights guard the wizards. Most of the common people are of Rashemi stock, with names closer to Tammith or Borivik than to those of the Mulan nobility.
A small share of this list is figures from the published setting, kept as anchors. The rest is invented in the same sounds: Mulan men and women with family names, titled wizards and officials, specialists named by their school, commoners with Rashemi-style names, and people known by a city or an epithet. The invented names are not part of the published setting.
How to choose Thayan names
- Match the name to the class. A Red Wizard or a noble takes a Mulan name such as Kazoth Hulthim or Nithola Tholkem, while a soldier, farmer or innkeeper usually has a Rashemi-style one like Karithak Belmokina.
- Use zulkir and tharchion sparingly. There are only eight zulkirs and eleven tharchions in all of Thay, so a campaign has room for one or two; most Red Wizards are specialists, khazarks or apprentices.
- Let the school show. The list labels some wizards as Necromancer, Evoker, Diviner and so on, which tells the table what to expect before the first spell is cast.
- Try the hyphenated forms for a traditional family. Names with a particle, such as Bahur-Ki, Luzar-De or So-Thamur, follow the handbook's Ehput-Ki, Thazar-De and So-Kehur.
- Say it aloud before the session. Sounds such as th, kh and a hard z are part of the style, but a villain's name has to survive being shouted by four players.
Frequently asked questions
What do Thayan names sound like?
Noble names are Mulan: hard, breathy sounds such as th, kh and z, sometimes a hyphenated particle, and a heavy family name. Bezoth Khuldem, Ekhari Luthrakt and Ozeth-Ki Teth from this list are typical. Commoners more often have Rashemi-style names like Mirovik Fyernoga.
What is the difference between a zulkir and a tharchion?
A zulkir is the head of one of the eight schools of magic among the Red Wizards, and together the zulkirs rule Thay. A tharchion is the governor of a tharch, one of its eleven provinces. The list writes them in the form Ozrakh Tuul, Zulkir of Necromancy and Tharchion Khelizi Morn of Surthay.
Are these names from the D&D books?
A small share are, such as Szass Tam, Aoth Fezim and Dmitra Flass, along with the Player's Handbook sample names. The rest are invented in the same sounds for your own characters and should not be read as part of the published setting.
Can I use these for a Thayan who is not a Red Wizard?
Yes. Thay has soldiers, priests, merchants and farmers as well as mages. Entries such as Mezoth of the Griffon Legion, Thayan Knight Zethira Kord, Olvarra the Spice Seller and Borlak of Bezantur are written for them.
