Generate D&D shifter names for Eberron characters: single wandering names like Stripe, Burr and Longfang, village names like Marda Thatcher, and paired forms like Harl "Badger" and Ike called Snag.

About D&D shifter names

Shifters in the Eberron setting of Dungeons & Dragons have no language of their own. They take the names of the people they live among, often the farming and forest communities of the Eldeen Reaches, and many also go by a single word for a trait, a look or a habit. The rulebook's own examples are Badger, Bear, Cat, Fang, Grace, Grim, Moon, Rain, Red, Scar, Stripe, Swift, Talon and Wolf, and all fourteen are in this list.

About two fifths of the names are single words of that kind, the wandering names. They run from beast and body (Claw, Mane, Tusk) through temperament (Patience, Restless) and weather, moon and season (Frost, Harvest, Thaw) to hunt and trail (Track, Snare, Burr). Some suit one kind of shifting: Thickhide for a beasthide, Longfang for a longtooth, Quickstep for a swiftstride, Farscent for a wildhunt.

The rest are for shifters with a foot in settled life. There are plain village names such as Marda Thatcher, and the largest group pairs a given name with a wandering name, as in Harl "Badger" or Ike called Snag. A few carry a title, such as Moonspeaker Hazel for a shifter druid or Elder Tusk for the oldest voice in a pack.

How to choose D&D shifter names

  • Choose the wandering name from something the character does at the table. A shifter who always scouts ahead is a Pointer or an Upwind; one who complains through every watch is a Grumble.
  • Match the name to the shifting. Beasthide shifters suit heavy names like Boarback and Ironpelt, longtooth shifters suit Redjaw and Gnash, swiftstride shifters suit Flit and Springheel, and wildhunt shifters suit Truetrack and Coldtrail.
  • Give a settled shifter two names. Family and neighbors use the given name and the road uses the wandering one, which is what the paired entries show.
  • Let a wandering name be earned in play. Start with a village name such as Tobin Wainwright and let the party hand out the one-word name after a memorable scene.
  • Keep it short. One or two syllables make a wandering name easy to call across a forest or a battle map.

Frequently asked questions

How do shifters get their names in D&D?

In Eberron, shifters have no language of their own and use the names of the culture around them. Many also go by a single descriptive word, and the rulebook gives Badger, Fang, Grim, Rain, Scar, Stripe and Talon among its examples. This list adds many more in the same style, such as Burr, Thaw and Hackle.

What is a good name for a longtooth or beasthide shifter?

For a longtooth, try Longfang, Redjaw, Snaggle or Gnash. For a beasthide, Thickhide, Boarback, Tusker and Ironpelt fit the tougher build. Swiftstride shifters suit Quickstep or Flit, and wildhunt shifters suit Farscent or Truetrack.

What do the quotation marks mean?

A name such as Harl "Badger" or Tamsin "Burr" gives a shifter's given name first and the wandering name in quotes. Use both together, or drop either half. Forms like Ike called Snag and Moss, once Tobias say the same thing in words.

How is this different from the Shifter Name Generator?

That page has modern first names with wilderness surnames for wolf, bear and dragon shifters in romance and urban fantasy. This one follows the D&D convention for the shifters of Eberron, so it has one-word names, village names and no dramatic surnames.
