Generate Asian country names by region and style: short names like Lanzhao, Mirinae and Suryadesh, native forms like Nusa Kencana and Bayan Uls, formal titles like Sultanate of Malindra and Khanate of the Singing Sands, plus real former states such as Srivijaya and Goguryeo for alternate history.

About Asian country names

Asia holds dozens of naming traditions, so a fictional Asian country sounds right only when it picks a region. East Asian names are short compounds: two Chinese-style syllables (Lanzhao, Jinlan), a Japanese phrase ending in shima, hara or no Kuni, or a Korean name ending in guk or nara, both words for country. Mainland Southeast Asia gives Muang, Nakhon and Nokor, plus the Sino-Vietnamese Dai, meaning great. The islands use Malay and Indonesian words such as Nusa (island), Tanah (land) and Negeri (state), and Tagalog forms like Kaharian ng, kingdom of.

South Asian names lean on Sanskrit and Tamil endings. Desh and nadu both mean land or country, khand is a region, garh a fort and rajya a realm, which gives Suryadesh, Kadalnadu and Parvatrajya. Central Asia adds the Persian suffix stan, land of, the Mongolian word uls, nation, and Turkic words for steppe, mountain and city: Tengristan, Bayan Uls, Altyn Dala.

About a third of the list uses formal English styles, from Kingdom of Ten Thousand Terraces to Sultanate of Malindra and Khanate of the Singing Sands. Forty entries are real former states and historic regions such as Srivijaya, Goguryeo, Magadha and Sogdia, included for alternate history. The rest are inventions built from real word parts, not translations, so check any meaning with a speaker before it carries weight.

How to choose Asian country names

  • Pick the region first, then the name. A setting with monsoon ports and rice terraces wants Nusa Kencana or Lan Kham, while a land of grass and caravans wants Bayan Uls or Khanate of the Seven Wells.
  • Match the title to the ruler. Sultans and emirs head Muslim states, khans lead steppe peoples, rajahs rule in South and Southeast Asia, and a shogun is a military ruler, so Sultanate of Bentara and Shogunate of Kurogane imply very different courts.
  • Do not blend regions by accident. A Japanese-sounding capital inside a Sanskrit-named kingdom reads as a mistake unless your world explains it with trade, conquest or migration.
  • Use the short name in dialogue and the formal style on maps and treaties. Characters say Malindra; the treaty says Sultanate of Malindra.
  • Real former states such as Champa, Balhae and Kosala carry real history and living descendants. Read up before you borrow one, and search any invented name too, since a coined word can turn out to be a real town.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of Asian country names does this generator make?

It covers ten styles: Chinese-style compounds, Japanese and Korean names, mainland Southeast Asian names, Malay, Indonesian and Filipino names, South Asian and Himalayan names, Central Asian names, monarchies, sultanates and khanates, republics and unions, and real former states. Examples run from Mirinae and Kadalnadu to Federation of the Monsoon States.

Are these real countries?

No current country is on the list. Forty names are real former states or historic regions, including Ayutthaya, Majapahit, Baekje and Khwarazm, and the rest are invented. An invented name can still match a real town or district somewhere, so search it before you publish.

What is the difference between a khanate, a sultanate and a rajahnate?

Each is named for its ruler. A khanate is ruled by a khan, a title from the Turkic and Mongol steppe; a sultanate by a sultan, a title used across the Muslim world from Central Asia to the Malay islands; a rajahnate by a rajah, a South and Southeast Asian word for king. Choosing one tells readers a lot about religion, geography and culture before you describe anything.

Can I use these names in a book, game or campaign?

Yes, the names are free to use in fiction, tabletop campaigns, strategy games and classroom exercises. Short names such as Lanzhao, Himalung or Zarkent suit maps and dialogue, while formal ones such as Republic of Liwayway suit treaties and passports. If the name will be sold on a product, do your own search first.
