About anime demon names

Anime demons are named in three recognizable registers, and picking the right one is most of the work. The first is the single ominous Japanese name: Demon Slayer's Akaza, Doma and Kokushibo, Jujutsu Kaisen's Sukuna, Mahito and Jogo, Inuyasha's Naraku. These are usually two or three syllables, written in harsh or unusual kanji, and they drop the surname entirely; the demon has left its human identity behind, so a character like Akaza only reveals his old name, Hakuji, in flashback. The second register is folklore: oni and yokai names such as Shuten-doji, Tamamo-no-Mae, Gashadokuro and Nue, plus the '-maru', '-hime' and '-doji' endings that mark a named spirit.

The third register is Western. Series like High School DxD, Black Clover, Iruma-kun and The Seven Deadly Sins borrow names from the Ars Goetia (Gremory, Sitri, Phenex, Asmodeus, Valac) and use them as noble houses, pairing them with European given names, or they invent heavy, Latinate Demon Lord names like Lucifero, Megicula and Zagred. A fourth, smaller style is the epithet: Chainsaw Man's Gun Devil and Bomb Devil, or Demon Slayer's Upper Rank titles placed in front of the name.

Choose the register that matches your setting. A Taisho-era slayer story wants single kanji names; an isekai demon realm wants Goetic houses and long Latinate names; a modern horror series can mix both.

How to choose anime demon names

  • Match the naming register to the world: single kanji names (Akaza, Enmu) for Japanese-set series, Goetic house names (Vassago, Orobas) for isekai or DxD-style demon nobility.
  • Give a Japanese-style demon a separate, ordinary human name for flashbacks, mirroring Akaza/Hakuji and Kokushibo/Michikatsu; the contrast is where the pathos comes from.
  • Keep single demon names to two or three syllables with hard consonants (k, g, z, r) and avoid common modern given names like Yuki or Haruto, which read as human.
  • Use a title or epithet (Upper Rank, Demon King, Bone-Eater) only for demons who have earned rank in the hierarchy; nameless low-tier demons are usually described by form instead.
  • Avoid stacking Lucifer, Satan and Beelzebub onto one character; pick a single obscure Goetic name and let the reputation build in-story.

Frequently asked questions

How are demons named in anime?

Most Japanese-set series give demons a single short name in unusual kanji (Akaza, Sukuna, Naraku) with no surname, while isekai and Western-flavored series use Ars Goetia names like Gremory, Sitri and Valac as noble houses or invent Latinate names like Lucifero and Megicula. Folklore-based series use real oni and yokai names such as Shuten-doji or Nue.

What is a good anime demon name for an OC?

For a Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen-style OC, use a two or three syllable name with hard consonants, such as Zanketsu, Kagetsuki or Byakurai, and give the character a plain human name for backstory. For a DxD or Black Clover-style OC, pair a European first name with an obscure Goetic house, like Lysandra Vassago or Cassiel Orobas.

Can I use canon names like Akaza or Sesshomaru?

Canon names belong to their creators and publishers and are fine for fanfiction, roleplay and fan art, but not for commercial original work. The original names in this generator are free to use anywhere.

What is the difference between oni, yokai, akuma and majin?

Oni are the horned ogre-demons of Japanese folklore, yokai is the broader word for supernatural creatures and spirits, akuma is the general word for demon or devil (often Western-style), and majin means a demon god or demonic being of great power, as in Majin Buu. Anime uses all four, and English dubs often translate any of them as 'demon'.
