Generate Cuphead-style names for original characters and bosses: tableware heroes like Saucerhead and Ms. Goblet, pun bosses like Dahlia Deadhead and Commodore Codswallop, toy henchmen like Count Checkmate, and stage titles like Teapot Tempest.

About Cuphead names

Cuphead is drawn like a 1930s rubber hose cartoon, and its names follow a recipe from the same era. Take an object, a plant, an animal or a bad habit, turn it into a person, and give it a title or a surname with a pun in it. The heroes are tableware: Cuphead, Mugman, Ms. Chalice and Elder Kettle. The bosses stack a joke on top: Cagney Carnation borrows a film star's name, Hilda Berg the zeppelin puns on the Hindenburg, and Goopy Le Grande and Captain Brineybeard say what they are before the fight starts. Most fights also have a short title with a rhyme or a shared first letter, such as Floral Fury and Botanic Panic.

The list follows those habits in groups: kitchen and tableware heroes, garden and vegetable bosses, critters named after 1920s and 1930s slang and dance crazes, toy and game-piece henchmen, candy and carnival acts, sea and sky bosses, puns on stars of the period, bad habits turned into villains, double acts, bosses with a title after the name, and stage titles.

A small share are characters from the game, kept as anchors for the style. The rest are original names for your own characters, fan comics and tabletop bosses, with the villainy kept to cartoon mischief.

How to choose Cuphead names

  • Start with the object and add the title last. Ms., Elder, Captain, Baroness, Professor and Dr. all fit the period, and a plain thing with a grand title, such as Duke of Dishwater, is half the joke.
  • Borrow slang of the time. Applesauce, banana oil and horsefeathers all meant nonsense, which is why Applesauce Annie and Horsefeathers Hank sound like the right decade.
  • Give every boss a stage title as well as a name. Two words that rhyme or share a first letter do it: Teapot Tempest, Picnic Panic, Ragtime Rampage.
  • Bosses in this style change shape between phases, so a name that hints at the last form pays off. Constance Stellation is a sky boss who can end the fight as a set of stars.
  • Keep the villains cartoon villains. Swindlers, braggarts, sourpusses and fussbudgets suit the tone better than anything truly frightening.

Frequently asked questions

How are Cuphead characters named?

Most names are a thing turned into a person plus a pun. The heroes are named for what they are (Cuphead, Mugman), and the bosses add a title, a surname or a nod to a 1930s star, as Cagney Carnation and Captain Brineybeard do. The names in this list use the same recipe, for example Saucerhead, Basil Wrathbone and Commodore Codswallop.

Are these names from the game?

A small share are, as anchors: Cuphead, Mugman, Ms. Chalice, Elder Kettle, Cagney Carnation and about two dozen other bosses and side characters. The rest are original names written in the style of the game. This is a fan page and is not connected with Studio MDHR.

What makes a good Cuphead boss name?

Three things: a clear thing or habit, a pun, and a touch of the 1930s. Baron Von Bamboozle, Dahlia Deadhead and Toffee-Nosed Tobias each tell you what the boss is and how the fight will feel. Add a stage title such as Greenhouse Grudge and the boss is ready.

Can I use these for a Cuphead OC?

Yes, that is what the list is for. Tableware names such as Ms. Goblet, Elder Samovar and Sir Spoonsworth suit heroes and helpers, while the pun names suit bosses for fan comics, animations and tabletop games.
