Generate names for a Crusader Kings III campaign: dynasties and cadet houses such as House de Montclair, af Skarnes and Banu Tariq, custom faiths like The Aurelian Rite, rulers with rank and epithet, hybrid cultures such as Anglo-Norse, and custom realms like Empire of the North Sea.

About CK3 names

Crusader Kings III asks you to name far more than one character. A long campaign can have you naming a dynasty and its cadet houses, a custom faith, a hybrid or divergent culture and sometimes a brand new kingdom or empire, and this list covers all of them in a medieval register. More than a third of it is dynasty names built on regional particles: de and d' for French and Norman houses, von and zu for German ones, af for Scandinavia, Banu for Arab clans, mac and Ua for Gaelic kindreds, ap and ab for Welsh lines, and the founder suffixes -ing and -id.

About a fifth is custom faiths made from generic words such as rite, way, creed and covenant, so nothing here borrows the name of a living religion. The rest is rulers with a rank and an epithet, custom kingdoms and empires, hybrid and divergent cultures, and a small set of holy orders and mercenary bands.

About one name in ten is plain history, such as Karling, Stenkil, Norse-Gael or Varangian Guard, kept as style anchors. The patronymics (ap Rhys, mac Áeda, Ordóñez) are ordinary forms that real families carried too, and the rest are made up in the same style. This is an unofficial fan page with no connection to the game's publisher.

How to choose CK3 names

  • Match the particle to the culture of your first ruler: de or d' for French, von for German, af for Norse, Banu for Arab, mac or Ua for Gaelic, and ap for Welsh (ab before a vowel, as in ab Owain).
  • Name a cadet house after its seats rather than its founder. A double name such as House Valmont-Ferrières or von Hohenwart-Sulzbach shows at a glance which branch holds which castle.
  • Give a custom faith a name that says how it differs. A Rite or a Communion sounds like a breakaway from an organized church, while Old Ways Reformed or Reformed Hearth-Faith sounds like a pagan faith with new doctrine.
  • The game hands out nicknames itself, so treat an epithet such as Jarl Arnfinn the Oathkeeper as a goal to play toward or a line for your campaign write-up.
  • For a hybrid culture, put the culture you want to feel senior first and say the result out loud. Anglo-Norse and Lombardo-Greek both pass that test.

Frequently asked questions

What can I name by hand in CK3?

Quite a lot: your dynasty and house, the titles you hold, a faith you create or reform, and, with the Royal Court expansion, a hybrid or divergent culture. The ruler designer also lets you type a first name and a dynasty name for a custom starting character. This list has names for each of those.

Are these names taken from the game?

No. This is an unofficial fan list and it makes no claim about what the game's own name lists contain. About one entry in ten is plain history, for example Karling, Stenkil, de Hauteville, Ua Briain, Norse-Gael and Varangian Guard. Patronymics such as ap Rhys or mac Áeda are ordinary forms that real people carried, and the rest are made up in the same style.

How do I pick a CK3 dynasty name?

Start from the culture. A particle plus a seat gives de Rochebrune, von Falkenried or af Skarnes, while a founder's name gives Banu Tariq, mac Fergusa, ap Cynan or Hrolfing. If your founder has no castle yet, a founder name is the safer choice, because it still makes sense after the capital moves.

Why do the custom faiths avoid real religions?

The faith names are fictional and use generic words such as rite, way, creed and covenant, as in The Marcher Rite, The Salt Covenant or Old Ways Reformed. That keeps them usable for any heresy or reformed pagan faith you create, without speaking for a living religion.
