About crown names

Real crowns are almost never called just 'the crown'. They are named for a saint (the Crown of Saint Wenceslas), a material (the Iron Crown of Lombardy, so called for the nail of the True Cross worked into its band), a maker or a monarch (Saint Edward's Crown), or a role in the ceremony (the Imperial State Crown). Fantasy follows the same habits and adds a layer of curse and prophecy: Tolkien's Iron Crown of Morgoth, the Hollow Crown of Shakespeare's histories, the cursed regalia that turn up in countless D&D hoards.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the crown's material to the culture: iron and antler for hard northern kingdoms, coral and pearl for sea realms, gold and jewels only for empires rich enough to afford them.
  • Give a kingdom more than one crown. Real monarchies had a coronation crown, a state crown and a consort's crown; naming two or three (The Summer Crown of Alvaren, The Winter Crown of Alvaren) makes a realm feel lived-in.
  • Let the common folk rename it. Heralds say the Coronal of Ashkaran; everyone else says Old Greyweight. Using both in your story sells the history.
  • For cursed or prophetic crowns, use a sentence-shaped name (The Crown the Crows Remember, The Crown Nobody Wanted); it reads like a line from a ballad.
  • Avoid stacking jewels and adjectives. One concrete material or image plus one proper noun (Jade Crown of Shenlor) is stronger than three superlatives.

What is the difference between a crown, a circlet, a diadem and a coronet?

A crown is the full ceremonial headpiece of a monarch, often arched or jewelled. A circlet is a simple unbroken band, frequently worn by princes, elves or lesser royalty in fantasy. A diadem is a band or half-circle, historically a ribbon of rule, now used for ornate jewelled headbands. A coronet is a small crown worn by nobility below royal rank. In fiction the words are mostly flavor, so choose the one that sounds right for the culture.

How were real historical crowns named?

Usually after a saint or monarch associated with them (Saint Edward's Crown, the Crown of Saint Stephen), the material or relic inside them (the Iron Crown of Lombardy), or their function (the Imperial State Crown, the Crown of Scotland).
