Generate coyote names for story characters, fursonas, game companions, stuffed animals and real wildlife you have nicknamed: Southwestern desert names, Spanish and Nahuatl names, trickster names from folklore, and scrappy yip-and-howl names for cartoon coyotes.
About coyote names
Coyote names pull from three places. The first is the animal's home range: the deserts, canyons and scrublands of the American Southwest and Mexico, which give you plant names (Mesquite, Ocotillo, Cholla, Saguaro, Yucca), landform names (Mesa, Arroyo, Rimrock, Caprock) and the warm dust colors of a coyote's coat (Tawny, Buckskin, Ochre, Sienna, Adobe). The second is language. The word coyote comes from the Nahuatl coyotl by way of Spanish, so Spanish nicknames (Lobito, Flaco, Chispa, Travieso, Pícara) and Nahuatl names (Xochitl, Citlali, Tonatiuh) sound right in a way that generic dog names do not. The third is folklore: across dozens of Native traditions Coyote is the trickster, the fire-thief and the star-scatterer, which is why names like Old Man Coyote, Ma'ii, Iisaw, Sly, Gambit and Flimflam belong on the list.
There is also the cartoon coyote, lanky and scheming and never quite catching the roadrunner. For that register the list leans on yips, howls and hustle: Yipper, Howler, Songdog, Scamp, Dodger, Skedaddle, Don Coyote, Ki-Yote, with a few Western first names (Wyatt, Jolene, Hoss, Cassidy) for anthropomorphic characters. Pick by tone: desert and Spanish names for something grounded, folklore names for a trickster, and yip-names for comedy.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the coyote's job in the story. A trickster wants a sly or folkloric name (Gambit, Pícaro, Old Man Coyote); a wild animal a character merely watches wants a place or plant name (Arroyo, Cholla, Mojave).
- Coyotes are lean and scrappy, not big and noble like wolves, so short, quick names with a yip in them (Scamp, Yipper, Chispa) usually fit better than grand ones.
- If you use a Spanish name, keep it consistent with the setting: Sonoran and Chihuahuan desert stories read naturally with Lobito, Paloma or Tonatiuh, while a Plains coyote might take Cheyenne, Dakota or Badlands.
- Use Native words like Ma'ii (Navajo) and Iisaw (Hopi) with respect and only when the story is actually set in that culture; otherwise the English trickster names do the same work.
- For a pair or pack, pick names from a single sub-style, such as all desert plants (Yucca, Agave, Mesquite) or all Spanish nicknames (Chuy, Kiko, Lupita), so they sound like they belong together.
Frequently asked questions
What are good names for a coyote character?
Names that sound lean and a little crafty. Desert names (Mesa, Ocotillo, Sierra), Spanish nicknames (Lobito, Chispa, Flaco), trickster words (Sly, Gambit, Scamp) and yip-and-howl names (Yipper, Howler, Songdog) all work; Wiley, Dusty, Tumbleweed and Bandit are the classic choices.
Are there female coyote names here?
Yes. The Spanish and Nahuatl sections are full of them (Lupita, Rosita, Paloma, Xochitl, Citlali, Yaretzi, Pícara, Traviesa), and nature names like Mariposa, Luna, Estrella, Juniper, Marigold and Sierra read as feminine without being cute.
Why are there Spanish and Nahuatl names on a coyote list?
Because the word itself is Mexican: coyote came into English from Spanish, which borrowed it from the Nahuatl coyotl, and the animal's heartland is the Southwest and Mexico. Names from those languages fit the species the way Norse names fit a wolf.
Can I use these names for a fursona, a game pet or a stuffed animal?
Absolutely. Everything here is free to use for original characters, fursonas, Minecraft and Stardew pets, plush toys and wildlife you have nicknamed in your yard. Only the handful of well-known cartoon coyotes belong to their studios.
