Dire Wolf Name Generator

Dire wolves were real animals: Aenocyon dirus, a heavier cousin of the grey wolf that roamed the Americas until about 10,000 years ago and left thousands of skeletons in the La Brea tar pits. Fantasy took the name and made the animal enormous, and two sources define how people name them today. The first is Norse myth, which gave us Fenrir, the wolf who swallows Odin, along with Sköll and Hati who chase the sun and moon, and Geri and Freki at Odin's feet. The second is George R. R. Martin's Stark direwolves: Ghost, Grey Wind, Nymeria, Summer, Shaggydog and Lady, each a single word chosen by a child to reflect the animal's look or the child's own nature.

Those two traditions cover most needs. Norse and Celtic names (Ulfr, Ylva, Faolan, Conall) suit wolves in a viking or highland setting; single evocative words (Ghost, Rime, Havoc, Umbra) suit companions named by their rider; and descriptive compound names (Broketooth, Old One-Eye, Bane of Elk) are what hunters and villagers call the beast that raids their herds. In D&D, a dire wolf is a common ranger's companion, druid wild shape and goblin mount, so a name that can be shouted in one breath is a practical virtue.

The best dire wolf names describe something you can see: a colour, a scar, a way of moving, or the thing it hunts.
